MINOT, N.D. – Minot State (12-9, 6-3 NSIC) used strong pitching and hitting to sweep a doubleheader from the University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (4-21, 2-10 NSIC) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball at Corbett Field on Saturday. The doubleheader was the first two games of a three-game series between USF and Minot State. The two teams will conclude the three game series with a nine-inning game on Sunday at noon.
G1 – Minot State 4 Sioux Falls 0 (7 innings)
In the opener, right-hander Andres Hackman of MiSU threw a two-hit complete game shutout to lead the Beavers to a 4-0 win against USF. Hackman allowed ust two hits with three strikeouts and a walk as he threw 84 pitches to 24 hitters.
USF starter
Alex Loosbrock had a solid outing but took the loss as he fell to 1-4 on the season. He allowed five runs and four runs with three strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Christian Lazar faced one hitter and recorded a strikeout.
Matt Graham finished for USf with one inning of scoreless relief pitching. USF had a single in three trips from
Josh Rehwaldt and a triple in three at bats from
Ryan Bernardy.
In the second inning, MiSU scored twice on a two-run single by Tyler Wiltshire. In the fifth inning, Michael Borst, who had two hits, tripled to score Trevaun Smith and he scored on an RBI single by J. Collins as MiSU took a 4-0 lead.
G2 – Minot State 14 Sioux Falls 3 (7 innings)
USF jumped to a quick 1-0 lead but MiSU responded with three runs in the first inning and three more in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead and earned a doubleheader sweep with a 14-2 victory.
MiSU starter Reilly O'Rourke (2-1) three hits and allowed just an unearned run while striking out four in picking up the win. Ryan Moroz threw one inning for MiSU and allowed an unearned run. Curtis Stahlecker finished for MiSU as he allowed a run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Sophomore
Brandon Roesler started (0-4) and took the loss for the Cougars. He allowed 10 runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 3 1/3 innings. Senior
Christian Lazar took over in the fourth inning but didn't retire a hitter and allowed three hits and three runs. Freshman
Jacob Emerson worked 2 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and a run with a strikeout.
USF finished with three runs on seven hits and one error. Both
Grant Lung and
Nash Dalzell led USF with two hits. Dalzell also had his first two RBIs at USF.
After Rehwaldt doubled and scored on a MiSU error for a 1-0 lead, the Beavers answered with three runs in the first and second innings and opened up a 14-1 lead with an eight-run fourth inning. Mason Giffords hit a three-run HR in bottom of 1st as Beavers took a 3-1 lead. In the second inning, Tyler Wiltshire singled to score Dillon Buckmeier and Ryley Humrighouse had a two-run double off Roesler as MiSU took a 6-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Beavers had an eight-run inning to put the game away. MiSU added to their lead as Humrighouse singled to score Wiltshire and Borst provided a run-scoring single for an 8-1 lead. After Lazar replaced Roesler, Giffords doubled to score Humrighouse for a 9-1 advantage. Then, Collins singles to plate Borst for a 10-1 lead. Wyatt Schossler followed with a two-run double and Wiltshire's two-run double gave the Beavers a 14-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Lung reached on a throwing error and then scored on a single by pinch hitter
Nash Dalzell. In the seventh inning, Dalzell's double with two outs scored
Trey Hubers who walked as the Cougars cut the deficit to 14-3.
