Frankie Mickelson,
Lexie Swift and
Sydney Nieveen hit home runs and the combo of
Hanna Cress and
Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag dominated on the mound as USF took a 7-2 decision over Concordia – Ann Arbor (Mich.) on Friday, March 13 as part of the Spring Games in Florida.
Van Der Zwaag (4-2) earned her fourth win of the season by allowing just four hits and an earned run in five innings. She had two strikeouts and did not walk a hitter in facing 18 hitters. Freshman
Hanna Cress closed for USF with two innings of relief in which she allowed two hits and a run while striking out four of the nine hitters she faced.
USF had 10 hits included two from
Shayla Running, who had two run-scoring doubles. Mickelson hit her team-high fifth home run of the season and 14
th of her career while scoring a pair of runs. Sydney Nieeven hit her first home run of the season and 16
th of her career, which ranks eighth all-time at USF. With her 11
th RBI of the season, she is now fifth all-time with 92. With a three-run shot, Swift also had her first home run of the season and third of her career.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first inning when Mickelson reached on an error, stole second base and scored on
Shayla Running's RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Concordia also scored a run in the first off USF starter Van Der Zwaag. In the third inning, Nieveen homered for a 2-1 lead. Then
Emmie Uitts doubled and scored on Running's second RBI double of the game for a 3-1 lead.
USF added three more runs in the fifth inning as Mickelson hit her fourth home run in five games to move the lead to 4-1. With two out,
Cassie Van Beek and Rachel Klaasen singled, which was followed by Swift's three-run home run for a 7-1 lead. Concordia scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
