USF Football looks for sixth win in seven games on Senior Day against Upper Iowa

Cougars moved into the regional rankings at No. 9 this week

SIOUX FALLS -- With five wins in six games, the University of Sioux Falls Football Team (7-3, 4-1 NSIC South) will host Upper Iowa (1-9, 1-4 NSIC) at 1 pm today (Saturday, Nov. 13) in a South Division match up at Bob Young Field. This Senior Day day game will be the 99th NSIC game since USF joined the league in 2012. USF, which will face Upper Iowa for the ninth time, is 38-11 at home and 38-11 on the road. Today as part of Senior Day, the Cougars will recognize 13 seniors in a pre-game ceremony prior to kickoff.

USF moves into regional rankings at No. 9 - Win gives Coo South Division crown
After recording five wins in six games, the University of Sioux Falls Football Team has moved into the NCAA DII Regional Rankings for Super Region 4 at No. 9.  The Cougars have won two straight games by a combined 83-52 scoring margin with a 45-35 win over Minnesota State on Oct. 30 and a 38-17 victory over Wayne State last weekend. As a result, USF is now 4-1 in road games this season.

With a victory on Saturday, the Cougars will win at least a share of the NSIC South Division title. USF is 4-1 and tied with Augustana at 4-1 in the South standings. If the Cougars get the win, it will be the program's second overall South title as this squad would join the 2016 champs.

The Cougars, directed by fifth-year Head Coach Jon Anderson, have accumulated a 190-to-106 scoring differential over the past six games.  In the rankings in Super Region 4, Colorado Mines (9-1) is ranked first and followed by Angelo State (8-2) in second and Augustana (8-2), Bemidji State (8-2), Western Colorado (8-1), Central Washington (6-1), Minnesota Duluth (8-2), Midwestern State (5-2) and then Sioux Falls (7-3) and Colorado Mesa (7-2).  The NSIC, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) make up the 35-team NCAA Super Region Four this season.  The Division II Football Championship provides for a maximum field of 28 teams, seven from each of the four super regions.  The NCAA DII Football selection show is set to air on NCAA.com on Sun., Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. (CT).

Senior Recognition set for Saturday pre-game - halftime
On Saturday, the University of Sioux Falls will honor and recognize 13 football student-athletes in the pre-game ceremony prior to kickoff as well as four members of the USF Cheer Squad at halftime Here is a bio of the seniors.

Cheer Squad  -- The four seniors who have made huge contributions to the Cheer Squad at USF include -

Ashley Clausen of Woodbury, Minn., is a business administration major. She is the daughter of David and Amy Clausen.

Mya Groenhagen of Sioux Falls, S.D., is     majoring in nursing, She is the daughter of Randy and Sandi Groenhagen. 

Morgan Schwartz of Watertown, S.D., is a psychology major. She is the daughter of Phillip and Stacey Schwartz. 

Lindsay Wynia of Sioux Center, Iowa, is a social work and psychology major. She is the daughter of Deon and Allyssa Wynia.

USF Football to honor 13 seniors

Harvey (Michael) Enalls, a 6-1, 225 pound linebacker from Sioux Falls, S.D. (Washington HS), is a two-time All-NSIC honoree with a second team honors in 2019. He has played 43 games with 41 starts and accumulated 177 career stops with 109 solo stops. Enalls has 18.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks and five fumble recoveries. The son of Harvey Enalls and Tammy Fenner, he has 45 tackles in 2021 with 30 solos, five tackles for loss and a sack. His career best performances included 13 tackles in the Nov. 23, 2019 playoff game at Colorado Mines and 13 tackles against Bemidji State in 2018. He is a psychology and criminal justice major. 

Dorian Fedrick, a 6-2, 177 pound cornerback from Rialto, Calif. (Redlands HS), has played in 21 games with 21 starts while accumulating 52 solo stops and 72 tackles. He has 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, eight passes defended, a forced fumble and two interceptions. This season, Federick, a business administration major, has 40 tackles, including 35 solo stops as well as 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, interceptions and three pass breakups. The son of Monique Lucas and Bennie Federick, has a career-high  nine tackles against Augustana and SMSU this season.

Chris Hill, a 6-1, 210 pound defensive back from Bealeton, Va., has accumulated 56 career tackles with three interceptions and two pass breakups. This season, the graduate transfer from Alderson Broaddhus has 10 tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups. He is the son of Corinna Hill and is enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program. 

Josh Lanasa, a 6-5, 270 pound offensive lineman from Escanaba, Mich. (Eden Prairie HS), has played in several games for the Cougars. A graduate transfer from Minnesota Crookston, Lanasa was named to the UMC All-Decade Team. The son of Matthew Lanasa and Dawn Hanson, he is enrolled in USF's Master of Business Administration (Health Administration) program.

Zach Lyons, a 6-0, 272 pound graduate transfer from Eldersburg, Md. (DeMatha Catholic), has started all 10 games at center for Sioux Falls in 2021. He is part of an offensive line that ranks in the top-10 nationally in fewest sacks allowed. In his career, he has played 39 games as an offensive line. The son of Naomi and Patrick Lyons, he is a graduate sports management major. 

Nate Durfee, a 6-1, 205 pound defensive back from Sioux Falls, S.D. (Roosevelt HS), has made 34 starts and played in 44 games with Sioux Falls. He has 143 career tackles, including 90 solo stops with 53 assists. A graduate student in the Master of Business Administration program, Durfee has 3.5 tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups and four interceptions. In 2021, he has 41 tackles with 29 solo stops, three breakups and two interceptions. The son of Tom and Marla Durfee, he had a career best of 13 tackles against Colorado School of Mines in the NCAA DII playoff game on Nov. 23, 2019.

Dominic Pegley, a 6-1, 215 pound graduate transfer from Akron, Ohio (Coventry HS), has accumulated a team-high 51 passes for 645 yards with five TDs for USF this year. As a result he has caught 101 passes in his past two seasons (USF, Alderson Broaddus). He is among the nation's leaders with two blocked punts and also had a blocked punt return of 20 yards for a TD. Pegley had a game-high of eight receptions twice against Bemidji State and Augustana and a best of 98 yards receiving against U-Mary. The son of John and Mary Pegley, he is enrolled in USF's Master of Business Administration program.

Lee Pitts, a 5-11, 190 pound defensive back from Agoura Hills, Calif. (Oaks Christian HS), has has 67 career tackles with three interceptions, 10 pass breakups and an interception return for a TD of 57 yards (SMSU, 2021). This season he has 28 solo stops and 32 tackles with two tackles for loss, six passes defended, forced fumble and the pick-six of 57 yards, and a high of eight tackles vs. Minnesota State.  A graduate transfer from Azusa Pacific, Pitts has played in 27 career games. The son of Ron and Babette Pitts, he is enrolled in USF's Master of Business Administration program.

Ty Smith, a 6-5, 209 pound senior wide receiver from Sioux Falls, S.D. (Washington HS), Smith has accumulated 97 receptions for 1,353 yards and six TDs in his career at USF. In 32 games, he made 31 starts. Smith, an NSIC Academic All-NSIC selection three times, had a career-high of 110 yards receiving vs. Minnesota State in 201 and a high of eight receptions against Upper Iowa in 2018. He has 32 receptions for 426 yards and two TDs this season. The son of Jeff and Jolene Smith, he is enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program. 

Tavian Tumbleson, a 5-8, 235-pound graduate student from Mahtomedi, Minn. (Mahtomedi HS), is a fullback/tight end for the Cougars. He has played in all 10 games for USF and has caught a pass for 18 yards. He has played in 46 games at the collegiate level. The son of Amy Garrow and Thad and Heather Tumbleson, he is an education major.

David Vargas, a 6-3, 299 pound defensive lineman from Randolph, N.J. (Randolph HS), has played in 22 games at USF with 62 tackles, 32 solo stops, five TFLs, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. This season, he has 20 tackles with 12 solo stops in 10 starts for USF. His career-best is seven tackles against Augustana in 2021. The son of Elizabeth Perez, is a computer science major.


Joey Wehrkamp, a 6-2, 250-pound defensive end from Sioux Falls, S.D. (Washington HS), has accumulated 16.5 sacks - ninth all-time at USF - and 32 TFLs - 10th all-time at USF. In making 45 starts in 45 games, Wehrkamp has accumulated 127 tackles with 78 solo stops, nine pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. This year he ranks second in the NSIC in sacks with 8.5 and sixth in tackles for loss with 14. The son of Mike and Mistie Wehrkamp and a Master of Business Administration major, he had a game-high nine tackles against Bemidi State in 2018.

Andrew Johnson, a student assistant coach for USF, is from Milford, Ohio (Milford HS). He played for three years on the offensive line with USF. The son of Jeff Johnson and Becca Burgess, he is a sports management major.

Season Review - Cougars have won two straight by 83-52 differential
A week ago, USF had 333 yards and 146 yards and a 64-yard TD plus a shutdown defense to turn in a 38-21 road win at Wayne State. With the victory, USF improved to 9-0 all-time against the Wildcats. USF led 14-10 at the break and used a 21-7 margin in the fourth quarter to take a second straight win. In the victory, USF had a season-high seven sacks and recovered a fumble (Grant Rice) while Jazqueze Lockett had a 44-yard TD return on an onside kick.  USF kicker Nicholas Hernandez was named the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week after hitting a field goals and five extra points. Two weeks ago, USF churned up the yardage against Minnesota State, rolling up 607 yards and a season-high 9.4 yards per play during a 45-35 road win. Leading the way was Freeman with his 317 all purpose yards (career-high 213 rushing) and five total TDs. He had four TDs of 40 yards or more which is a school mark. He had 62 yards receiving including a 58-yard pitch and catch with Adam Mullen, who threw for 242 yards. USF rushed for 365 yards on 36 carries for 10.1 per tote.  Two weeks ago on Oct. 23, Cougars had a 10-7 lead late in the fourth quarter after Adam Mullen and Ty Smith hooked up on a seven-yard TD reception at the 4:52 mark of the fourth quarter. However, Winona State was able to convert a 70-yard pitch and catch from Owen Burke to backup tight end Dakota Matthees to squeeze out a 14-10 lead. USF had a chance for the win, driving inside the WSU 35-yard line with under a minute to play but turned the ball over on downs. USF was led by redshirt freshman Carter Slykhuis who had his first career 100-yard receiving game (102 yards) on a career-best eight catches.  Prior to that game, USF had won three straight games, including a 34-14 home win over U-Mary when USF rolled up 517 yards in total offense. Three weeks ago, the Cougars had a 35-7 win over SMSU which followed a 28-26 come-from-behind win in the "Key to the City" game with Augustana at Bob Young Field. 

With the victory against AU, the Cougars increased their series lead over the Vikings, 7-2, in the "Key to the City" series which began in 2012. In the win, the Cougars were led by redshirt freshman quarterback Adam Mullen who had a career-high 26 completions on 36 attempts for 251 yards and tied his career-high with three TDs. USF rallied to take a lead late when Mullen hit Dominic Pegley with a 26-yard TD pass. Jacqueze Lockett had two TDs (receiving, rushing). The USF defense ended the Vikings' hope when Giovanni Purpura had his second career interception at the USF 30-yard line. In the 35-7 win over SMSU on Oct. 9, Landon Freeman had a career-high 136 yards rushing with TDs of 20 and a career-best 69 yards while Carter Lohr set a school mark with 109 yards in interception returns on two picks. USF, which defeated SMSU for a ninth straight time, had four interceptions, including a pick-six of 57 yards by Lee Pitts, and totaled a school-record 166 yards in returns. 

The Cougars, directed by fifth year head coach Jon Anderson (31-14 overall, 31-12 in the NSIC), opened the season with a 24-16 setback to Bemidji State on Sept. 2 at Bob Young Field. In week two, USF rolled past Minot State, 49-10, as Mullen threw for three TDs and 199 yards while Thuro Reisdorfer recorded his second straight 100-yard rushing game of the season with124 yards on 16 carries and TDs of two and 44 yards. Then the Cougars returned home and rolled to a 50-14 win over Concordia St. Paul by rushing for 388 yards - 8th best in USF's DII era. The Cougars had 549 yards of total offense - a season high while holding CSP to -14 yards. Reisdorfer led USF with 160 yards rushing on 14 carries with three first-half TDs. Then, USF passed for 276 yards and rolled up 442 offensive yards but fell at Northern State, 41-10. It was USF's first-ever loss in the DII era to Northern State. USF had two backs over 100 yards in a game for the second time this season. USF totaled 517 yards in total offense. Dominic Pegley had a season-best 98 yards receiving and a 57-yard TD catch.

With two straight wins, the Cougars stands 4-1 in the NSIC South and can win a share of the divisional title with a win over UIU. The Cougars sit 7-3 and tied for fourth in the NSIC.   USF moved into the No. 9 spot in the regional rankings in SR-4 but a win keeps their NCAA DII playoffs hopes alive. However, the Mineral Water Bowl is not being held this year due to CoVID-19. 

Matchup Notes --

Upper Iowa, directed by head coach  Jason Hoskins, is averaging 331.0 yards and 17.0 points per game.  On defense, UIU allows 428.2 yards per game. The Peacocks dropped a 40-12 decision to Winona State on Nov. 6 last Saturday. The loss came after its first win of the season, a 42-41 win over Wayne State. 

The Cougars are the NSIC's leading rushing team with 215.6 yards per game as junior running Thuro Reisdorfer has gone over 1,000 yards for the second straight time, matching a feat by only four others in school history (David Ruter, 1996-98, Mike Dvoracek, 2004-06; Nick Kortan, 2001-02; and Nephia Garcia, 2013-14. Reisdorfer has a league-best 1,036 yards and 115.1 yards per game with a 6.8 avg and nine TDs. The Cougars rank seventh in the NSIC in total offense at 418.2 or 6.3 yards per play. They rank first in the NSIC in defensive scoring with 20.2 allowed per game and sit fifth in total defense at 369.9 yards allowed per game. USF kicker Nicholas Hernandez was named the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week after scoring eight points in USF's 38-17 win at Wayne State.

Running back Thuro Reisdorfer leads the NSIC in rushing with 1,036 yards on 152 carries and nine TDs. He averages 115.1 yards per game. Landon Freeman has 79 carries for 675 yards and eight TDs. He averaged 67.5 yards per game for the NSIC top rushing offense. Individually, USF redshirt quarterback Adam Mullen ranks first in the NSIC in completion percentage at 65.9 hitting on 184-of-279 passes for 1,982 yards and 14 TDs with a 137.9 pass efficiency ranking. As such, he is seventh in passing in the NSIC.  His leading receiver is Dominic Pegley with 51catches for 645 yards and five TDs (64.5 ypg). On defense, senior Joey Wehrkamp is second in the NSIC sacks with 8.5  has 16.5 for his career (9th all-time at USF). With 14 TFls, he now has 31.5 TFLs in his career, 10th all-time at USF.

Series Mark - USF leads 7-1 over Upper Iowa
he Cougars stand 7-1 all-time vs. Upper Iowa and have six straight wins.  A year ago, the Cougars rolled up 331 yards to take a 47-10 win. USF opened up a 28-3 lead by halftime. USF outscored the Peacocks, 19-7 in the second half for the final margin. Thuro Reisdorfer had 16 carries for 157 yards and two TDs.  In 2018, USF rolled up 616 yards in total offense and shut down the explosive Upper Iowa offense in recording a 34-7 victory at Bob Young Field.  USF, which held a 36:06-to-23:54 time of possession advantage, opened up a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. The Cougars held a 421-to-93 total yards edge in the first half and cruised to a 31-0 advantage at the break. The Peacocks put up a touchdown in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late. Gabriel Watson had 29 carries for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Colton Myles provided 13 carries for 84 yards and a two-yard touchdown run while QB Caden Walters completed 21-of-27 passes for a career-best 283 yards and threw a touchdown pass. In 2017, USF defeated the Peacocks, 19-7, as Jason Towns had 201 all purpose yards and Kyle Campiotti had a 67-yard interception return. In 2016, the USF took a 51-7 decision as Luke Papilion threw for 269 yards and a TD while Max Mickey had 92 yards rushing and two TDs. Papilion threw for 331 yards and three TDs while Solomon St. Pierre and John Tidwell had interception touchdown returns for USF in a 69-20 win over UIU in 2015. The Cougars took a 45-24 decision in 2014 at Bob Young Field. Papilion threw for 287 yards and three TDs as USF led, 24-0, at half. USF had a 282-to-36 advantage in rushing yards. UIU took a 30-28 decision in 2013 at Harms-Eischeid Stadium as Chris Smith ran for 258 yards and three TDs. Carrington Hanna had 298 yards pass and two TDs to lead USF. In 2012, USF outscored UIU, 54-41, at Bob Young Field. In the high scoring affair, Kristian Porter racked up 108 rushing yards and two TDs. USF QB Taylor Perkins charted his sixth game of the season with three or more passing TDs and finished 15-of-25 for 230 yards and three TDs. Jeremiah Oates had 162 yards receiving. Cole Jaeschke threw for 606 yards and five TDs to lead UIU.

Head Football Coach Jon Anderson announced the team captains for the 2021 season. The captains, selected by vote of the team, include seniors Ty Smith, Harvey Enalls, Joey Wehrkamp and junior Thuro Reisdorfer, all of Sioux Falls. 

Player Profiles -- Reisdorfer 5th back in school history with back-to-back 1K rushing totals
huro Reisdorfer, a 2019 All-NSIC selection, has continued to progress up the USF season and career charts as a junior running back for USF. With 2,288 yards, he has moved into 10th on USF career rushing chart. In nine games played, he ranks first in the NSIC in yards per game average at 115.1 with 1,036 rushing yards for a 6.8 average. He has nine TDs including a long of 64 yards. Reisdorfer is the fifth back in school history to reach 1,000 yards rushing in back to back seasons. He joins David Ruter, 1996-98, Mike Dvoracek, 2004-06; Nick Kortan, 2001-02; and Nephia Garcia, 2013-14.  He is averaging 6.8 yards per carry which ranks second in the NSIC to his teammate Landon Freeman.  His nine TDs are second in the NSIC. The Sioux Falls Washington prep has totaled six 100-yard plus rushing games this season and now has 11 in his career which ranks tied with Gabe Watson (2017-18) for seventh all-time at USF. This season, Reisdorfer has 22 carries for 150 yards against Bemidji State; 16 carries for 124 yards and two TDs against Minot State;14 carries for 160 yards and three TDs against Concordia St. Paul; 17 carries for 75 yards against Northern State and 19 carries for 145 yards and two TDs against U-Mary. He also had 19 carries for 63 yards against Winona State, 21 carries for 149 yards and a TD vs Minnesota State and 20 carries for 146 yards and a 64-yard TD against Wayne State. Reisdorfer, who rushed for 1,150 yards as a sophomore in 2019 and was named second team All-NSIC, has 28 career TDs with 22 by rushing. He has a school record 98-yard TD run vs Northern State (10-26-19) and a 80-yard kickoff return vs Minn. Crookston (10-12-19) as he has scored by rush, reception, and kickoff return
