²ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball Team, which was led by 10 points from
Danielle Schaub, had a difficult shooting night in falling to Concordia St. Paul, on Saturday night at the Gangelhoff Center.
With its second straight loss after six straight wins, the Cougars dropped to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the NSIC. With the setback, USF lost for just the second time in the last five meetings between the two schools, although CSP has won two straight.
After the two teams played to a 14-14 tie, CSP outscored USF, 22-8, in the second quarter for a 36-22 lead at the halftime break. CSP also had a 17-15 scoring edge in the third quarter for a 53-37 margin. And, the Golden Bears had an 18-14 margin in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
Schaub hit 3-of-6 field goals, including 1-of-2 from three-point range and dished two assists to lead the way for USF. The Cougars also had eight points and seven rebounds from junior forward
Kiara James and seven points and five rebounds from freshman guard
Megan Fannin. For the third straight game and the fifth time this year, junior guard
Dallie Hoskinson had double-digit rebounds with 10. She scored two points and had two assists while grabbing a game-high six offensive boards.
On the game, USF was 18-of-58 for 31 percent from the field and just 4-of-15 from three-point range for 26.7 percent. The Cougars won the rebound battle with a 37-35 advantage. CSP, which hit 44.9 percent from the field on 22-of-49 shooting, was led by four players in double-digits including 17 from Sydney Zgutowicz and Meghan DuBois. They made 7-of-14 from three-point range for 50 percent and had a huge edge at the foul line with 20-of-24 while USF was 11-of-16.
Scoring Summary –
USF, which hit 6-of-13 for 46.2 percent in the first quarter, took an 11-10 lead after a three-pointer from Fannin at the 3:23 mark. CSP, which hit 7-of-18 shots for 38.9 percent, drew even with USF by the end of the quarter. Fannin had seven points to lead the Cougars.
Early in the second quarter,
Madison Wuebben, who had six points, four rebounds and two assists on the night, matched a three from Zgutowicz as the Cougars and Golden Bears remained tied at 17. CSP responded with a three-point play from DuBois as the Golden Bears raced to a 32-19 lead after a 15-2 run, which gave a double-digit lead to CSP. By the end of the quarter, CSP, which hit 6-of-10 field goals, including all three of its triples and seven free throws, led, 36-22. USF struggled in the quarter by hitting just 3-of-17 field goals for 17.6 percent. USF had a triple and a free throw but couldn't sustain any offense.
In the third quarter, CSP opened on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 20 points at 44-24 with eight minutes to play. USF's offensive woes continued as they scored just five points on 2-of-11 shooting in the first seven minutes of the third quarter. After CSP moved to a 51-27 lead, Wuebben hit a three-pointer for USF. With a 7-0 run to end the third quarter, USF cut the deficit to 16 points at 53-37. In the quarter, USF shot 29.4 percent on 5-of-17 shooting and had four free throws. CSP was 4-of-11 for 36.4 percent with two triples and seven free throws.
In the fourth quarter, USF had a pair of turnovers and CSP pushed the lead to 57-37. USF tried to battle back as Schaub scored five straight points to cut the lead to 63-47 at the 4:18 mark. However, CSP, which was 5-of-10 for 50 percent and made 2-of-3 triples and 6-of-8 free throws, closed on an 8-4 run to earn the win. USF was 4-of-11 from the field and had a three and five free throws in the fourth quarter but it was not enough.
