USF WBB set to host Upper Iowa and Winona State in the Stewart Center this weekend

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball Team (5-3, 2-1 NSIC) will return home to host Upper Iowa University (1-6, 0-3 NSIC) and Winona State University (4-3, 1-2 NSIC) in NSIC action this weekend. The Cougars will face the Upper Iowa Peacocks on Friday, December 10 at 5:30 pm, followed by the Winona State Warriors on Saturday, December 11 at 5:30 pm. 

The Cougars, directed by USF Head Coach Travis Traphagen (all-time wins leader - 254), come into the game on a three-game winning streak, including a 70-57 win over South Dakota School of Mines, a 73-60 win over city rival Augustana, and a 76-75 home win over Wayne State.

Upper Iowa
In the overall series at the DII level, the Cougars hold a 18-1 advantage over the Peacocks. USF started the series strong on a three-game winning streak, until the Peacocks took their first and only victory, a 78-75 decision on December 14, 2013 in Fayette, Iowa. Since then, the Cougars have gone on a 15-game winning streak, with the most recent win a 86-78 decision in Fayette, Iowa on January 10, 2021. The last time the Cougars hosted the Peacocks was on January 24, 2020, where the Cougars took a 86-43 victory in the Stewart Center. 

Winona State
In the overall series at the DII level, the Warriors hold a 10-9 advantage over the Cougars. USF's first win was in the Stewart Center on January 25, 2013, which was a 53-49 victory. The Cougars are currently on a three-game winning streak, which includes the most recent matchup, a 73-67 decision in favor of USF on January 17, 2021 in the Stewart Center. 

Breaking Down the Opponents
Upper Iowa (1-6, 0-3 NSIC)
With one overall wins on the season so far, the Peacocks are averaging 67.7 points per game and have a .403 field goal percentage. From behind the arc, the Peacocks are 50-150 for .333 percent, with an average of 7.1 three pointers per game. From the free-throw line, the Peacocks have knocked down 56 of their attempted 78 shots for a .718 percentage and an average of 8.0 free-throws per game. On the glass, the Peacocks have grabbed 259 rebounds and blocked seven shots so far this year, while also grabbing 34 steals and fumbling 117 turnovers. Individually, the Peacocks are led on offense by Lydia Haack, who is averaging 15.3 points per game and shooting .458 from the field. Behind the arc, Haack is shooting .381 percent, while also shooting .917 percent from the free-throw line. Jessica Musgrave is averaging 14.3 points per game for the Peacocks. Musgrave is shooting .451 from the field and has grabbed 37 rebounds (6.2 per game) and eight steals. Brooke Evenson holds down the glass for the Peacocks, with 6.3 rebounds per game (44 rebounds total). 

Winona State (4-3, 1-2 NSIC)
Winona State, directed by head coach Scott Ballard, is averaging 62.3 points per game in going 4-3 on the year overall. From the field, the Warriors are shooting 44.2 percent and averaging 25.6 made field goals per game. From behind the arc, WSU is shooting 23.6 percent and averaging 4.3 three pointers per game, while also shooting 78.7 percent from the free-throw line. On the glass, the Warriors average 33.9 rebounds per game and have 17 blocks. WSU has 48 steals but turned it over 97 times on the year. Individually, WSU is led by Taylor Hustad, who is shooting 52.8 percent from the field and averaging 12.0 points per game. Emma Fee is the second-leading scorer for the Wildcats, averaging 10.6 points per game and shooting 55.7 percent from the field. Fee has grabbed 41 rebounds and recorded nine steals on the year . Emily Kieck has dished out a team-high 21 assists so far this season. 
 
Breaking down USF through eight games
USF is outscoring opponents, 73.4-to-64.6 or 8.8 margin. With those 73.4 points per game, USF ranks third in the NSIC. From the field, USF is shooting 215-of-486 for 44.2 percent (3rd in the NSIC) with 30.8 percent (7th, NSIC) from three-point range on 40-of-130 shooting. The Cougars have made .760 percent (4th, NSIC) at the foul line on 117-of-154 shooting. In addition, USF is averaging 35.8 rebounds, 12.5 assists, 11.0 steals and 2.0 blocks per game.  On defense, the Cougars have limited opponents to 27.3 percent shooting from three-point range and 39.3 percent overall from the field.

Player Profiles - Fannin leads USF in scoring 
Freshman guard Megan Fannin is averaging 17.1 points (4th, NSIC) and 3.3 rebounds per game. Fannin, who recorded a career-high of 26 points against Fort Hays State, has hit 44-of-100 field goals for 44.0 percent (12th, NSIC). She is hitting 40 percent (18-of-45) from three point range. Also, Fannin, who has made 31-of-34 foul shots, has eight career double-digit scoring games with seven straight (26, 15,18, 22, 13, 16, 20) this year. She has four games of 20 points or more and 160 career points.

Senior forward Krystal Carlson, who is putting up 10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, is hitting .508 percent from the field and .806 percent (25-of-31) at the foul line. Carlson has four double-digit games this season and 17 for her career with a double-double against SMSU in the regular season finale a year ago. In that game, she also had a career-high of 28 points to lead USF to an 88-83 overtime win at home.  In her career, she has 451 points with 75 this season. Carlson has 231 rebounds, including 83 on offense. 

Junior guard Dallie Hoskinson, who has eight double-digit scoring games at USF and 28 in her career (20 at Johnson CC), is also adding 9.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Hoskinson also has 18 career double-digit rebound games (12 at JCCC), including six at USF with a 10-rebound effort against Missouri Western on Nov. 12.  She has a team-high 24 steals or 3.0 per game. In her career at USF, she has had three or more steals in a game seven times, including three or more four straight games. She has scored 615 career points, 425 at JCCC and 190 at USF, giving her an average of 6.8 points per game. She has 507 total rebounds between JCC and USF for an average of six per game. She has 284 total assists as well as 135 steals. She has 28 double-digit games (20 at JCCC/8 at USF) with career-high of 20 points vs cross town rival Augustana on Dec. 2, 2021 when she also had eight rebounds and hit 8-of-14 shots from the field. She has 18 career double-digit rebound games. She has 12 double-doubles (10 at JCCC/2 at USF), as well as recording three triple-doubles at JCCC.

Sophomore guard Sydney White is averaging 5.1 points and 0.5 rebounds while hitting 17-of-33 for .515 percent. White has reached double-digits twice at USF with a career-best 18 against Missouri Western on Nov. 12.  

Forward Kiara James is supplying 6.1 points and 4.0 rebounds. She has 267 career points and 143 rebounds. James has a career-best 14 points vs Wayne State on Feb, 2, 2020. James, who has 18 career blocks and 24 assists, set her career-best with eight rebounds against Upper Iowa on Jan. 9, 2021.

Freshman Olivia Gamoke is adding 7.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists with 15 steals. She had a career-high of 10 points against No. 4 Fort Hays State on Nov. 13. Twice she has dished five assists and had a career-best four steals against Presentation College. Gamoke has two or more steals four times and four or more assists four times. 

Freshman Brecli Honner is averaging 5.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in making eight starts in eight games. She has scored six points this year on three occasions with a best of seven rebounds against Black Hills State. 

Danielle Schaub, a graduate transfer from Concordia St. Paul, scored 13 points against Missouri Western and has 22 on the season. She has 24 double-digit scoring games with a high of 27 points against Augustana on Feb. 15, 2020 when she hit a career-best nine three-pointers while playing at Concordia St. Paul. In her career, she now has 545 career points.

HC Travis Traphagen is in his 14th season at USF
Head Coach Travis Traphagen has made a significant impact with the University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball Team. In his 14th season at USF, he has established the career wins mark of 256 with six 20-win seasons, NSIC Tournament title, two tournament final appearances, and a pair of NCAA DII Tournament berths.
 
Traphagen owns a 256-126 (.672) overall record, with six 20-win seasons, two NCAA DII Central Regional berths (2015-16, No. 7 seed; 2019-20, No. 3 seed) and a NSIC South Division title. He had back-to-back 20-win seasons twice at the DII level, including the 2019-20 (26-6) and 2018-19 (23-8) seasons. He also had back-to-back 20-win campaigns in 2015-16 and 2016-17 with the first NCAA Tournament berth in USF Women's Basketball history in 2015-16. He also directed USF to the NCAA DII berth in 2019-20. At the DII level, he has had four 20-win seasons with at least 22 wins each year. The 27 wins in the 2015-16 season is the most by USF at the DII level.cWith a 256-126 record, Traphagen is 136-44 at home, 99-69 in away games and 21-13 on a neutral floor. The Cougars have a 116-76 NSIC record, including 62-35 at home and 54-41 on the road. Traphagen, who has directed USF to seven straight winning seasons, has twice guided the Cougars to the NSIC Tournament title game, winning in 2015-16 to earn USF's first trip to the NCAA Tournament in their Division II history. USF is 15-8 in the NSIC Postseason Tourney with Traphagen at the helm.
