TOPEKA, KAN. – Led by five golfers in the top 32, the University of Sioux Falls Men's Golf Team ranks fourth in the team standings after day one of the Washburn Invitational, which opened Monday (March 22) at the Topeka Country Club.
USF is fourth with a two-round total of 32-over par 600 (305-295) on the Par 71, 6,654-yard course. The 16 men's teams played two, 18-hole rounds on Monday and will conclude with another 18-hole round on Tuesday.
Led by Andrew Beckler, who is 10-under 132 (64-68), Washburn holds a two-shot lead at six-over par 574 (283-291) over Missouri Western State at eight-over par 576 (292-284) and followed by Southwestestern Oklahoma State in third at 26-over par 594 (301-293) with USF fourth.
The Cougars, led by junior
Jack Evans, who was tied for 15
th, and senior
Brenden Bassing, who was tied for 17, improved two spots in the standings with an overall 10-shot improvement from round one to round two.
Evans opened with his season-best round of 72 and finished at seven-over par 149 (72-77) to place in the top15. Bassing also carded his best round of the year with an even par 71 on round two. He finished at eight-over par 150 (79-71) and tied for 17
th.
Sophomore
Gavin Metz moved up 26 spots from round one to two round. After opening with an 81, he carded a one-over par round of 72 and sits at 11-over par 153 (81-72) and a tied for 28
th.
Seniors
JJ Cooney and
Jacob Zosel, who had top five finishes a week ago in leading USF to a team title at the Hillcat Classic in Owasso, Okla., finished the second round tied for 32
nd overall. Cooney had his 12-over par 153 (79-75) with an opening round of 79 and then cut four shots over his total with a 75 in the second round. As for Zosel, he had a 12-over par 154 (75-79) with a 75 on the first round followed by a 79.
Playing as an individual,
Jake Oetzmann finished tied for 74
th with a two-round total of 24-over par 166 (82-84).
