BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – University of Sioux Falls freshman Charlie Hanson capped a historic debut season by competing at the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Central/Midwest Regional, becoming the first student-athlete in program DII history to qualify as an individual for NCAA Regional Championship competition. Competing against some of the top golfers in the region at Katke Golf Course, Hanson posted a three-round total of 228 (+12) with consistent rounds of 76-76-76 to finish tied 61st out of 117 golfers.

Hanson's appearance marked another milestone for a Sioux Falls men's golf program that continues to reach new heights. After helping lead the Cougars to a program-best tie for second at the NSIC Championship, the freshman standout extended his season into NCAA postseason play, representing USF on one of Division II golf's biggest stages.

Historic First for USF Golf
Hanson entered the regional as one of just four individual selections from the Central Region, earning the berth after one of the strongest freshman campaigns in school history. The Morris, Minnesota native became the first golfer in program history to qualify for NCAA Regional competition as an individual, further adding to a breakthrough season for the Cougars.

Facing a talented regional field with NCAA Championship berths on the line, Hanson showed poise and consistency across all three rounds.

How It Happened
Hanson opened the tournament with a 76 (+4), navigating a challenging Katke Golf Course layout with steady play throughout the round. After making the turn at 38 (+2), he matched that score on the back nine to remain within striking distance heading into day two.

Round two followed a similar pattern, as Hanson again carded a 76 (+4). Despite a difficult front nine, he responded with an even-par back nine, highlighted by a birdie on the par-3 17th to maintain momentum entering the final round.

Hanson saved his strongest stretch for the final day, turning in a 35 (-1) on the front nine, including birdies on holes eight and nine to briefly move under par for the round. He ultimately closed with a 76 (+4), finishing his tournament with a 228 (+12) against elite regional competition.

A Freshman Season to Remember
Hanson's postseason appearance put the finishing touches on a remarkable freshman season. He posted a 73.19 scoring average, the best by a first-year player in program history and the fourth-best single-season scoring average overall at USF.

His season included one tournament victory, three top-five finishes, five top-10 finishes, and 11 rounds at par or better. Hanson opened his collegiate career with a tie for second at the MSU/CSP Fall Brawl, captured medalist honors at the USF Invitational, and helped guide the Cougars to one of the best team seasons in program history.
