INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – University of Sioux Falls freshman Charlie Hanson has been selected as an individual competitor for the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Central/Midwest Regional, becoming the first student-athlete in program history to qualify as an individual for NCAA Regional Championship competition.
Hanson is one of four individual selections from the Central Region and will compete May 7-9 at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Michigan, with a berth in the NCAA Division II Championships on the line.
The freshman from Morris, Minnesota, earned the selection following a historic debut season in which he posted a 73.19 scoring average — the best by a first-year player in program history and the fourth-best single-season scoring average in school history. Hanson recorded one tournament victory, three top-five finishes and five top-10 finishes while helping lead the Cougars to one of the strongest seasons in program history.
"Charlie had a great season for us and I'm really happy he gets to keep playing," said USF head coach Wade Merry. "This is a great honor for him and for our golf program."
Hanson opened his collegiate career with a tie for second at the MSU/CSP Fall Brawl after back-to-back rounds of 69, then captured medalist honors at the USF Invitational with a 1-under 143. He added a fourth-place finish at The Hillcat Classic and tied for 11th at the NSIC Championships, helping the Cougars tie for second as a team — the highest conference championship finish in program history.
His 27-round season included 11 rounds at par or better and five tournaments finished at even par or under, highlighting the consistency that propelled him into the NCAA postseason field.
The Central Region features 10 teams and four individuals, with the top three teams and top two individuals not on advancing teams moving on to the NCAA Division II Championships Finals May 18-22 at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
