USF Head Baseball Coach Grant Hieb announces signing of nine to 2022 recruiting class

SIOUX FALLS -- University of Sioux Falls Head Baseball Coach Grant Hieb has announced that nine student-athletes have signed and will continue their athletic and academic careers at USF in the fall of 2021.  
 
"With this group, we have the start to a standout 2022 class. They helped meet some of our program positions needs. I like the way this recruiting class has come together," said fifth-year USF Head Coach Grant Hieb, whose baseball team tied a program record with 21 wins (21-21) and advanced to the NSIC Postseason Tournament for the second time in the DII era. "In this group, we have added quality depth at the infield and outfield with athleticism and energy. They will excel in the classroom. We are looking forward to having them join our program," said Hieb.

The 2022 recruiting class for USF includes Tresden Gonsior, pitcher, Fullerton, Neb.; Andres Gonzalez, pitcher/outfielder, Sahuarita, Ariz.; Jackson Kramer, outfielder, Larchwood, Iowa; Gabriel Kristal, outfielder, Perris, Calif.; Mason Leonard, pitcher, Springfield, Minn.; Joey Meurer, outfielder/pitcher, Woodbury, Minn.; Dane Small, infielder, Martell, Neb.; David Swanson, infielder, Lincoln, Neb.; and Mitchell Willis, pitcher, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Notes: Gonsior was a two-sport standout in baseball and basketball. A four-year varsity starter and letter winner at shortstop/pitcher for the Central City/Fullerton Kernels. While hitting .370 with a .585 on-base percentage and 1.750 earned run average (1.143 WHIP), Gonsier accumulated a numbers of awards. He helped lead his American Legion Junior Team to the state tournament twice. He led his Legion team in batting average as well as wins and strikeouts. Gonsier, who threw a no-hitter and a one-hitter in 2020, set Central City/Fullerton program records for hits in a game and singles in a senior. He was the team's American Legion Seniors Hitter of the Year in 2019 and a three-time Defensive Player of the Year. An Academic All-State Baseball selection, he served as a team captain as a sophomore. He also placed for the RedRage Baseball/Impact Athletics team. In basketball, he was a four-year letter winner and two-year starter, helping his team to three state tournament appearances. Twice Gonsior helped his team finish runner-up in the conference as served team captain as a senior. The son of Scott and Amy Gonsior, he has two siblings – Teagan and Terrick. In high school, he was involved in FFA and named to the Honor Roll and Roll of Excellence and participated in the school's food drive. He plans to major in business administration at USF.

Andres Gonzalez, 5-11, 183, Fr., Pitcher/Outfielder, Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita HS
Notes: At Sahuarita, Ariz., Gonzalez started as a pitcher, first baseman and in the outfield. In high school, he has a .336 batting average with two home runs and 20 RBI. Gonzalez also recorded a 1.98 earned run average with 18 strikeouts. Named to the Honor Roll and Principal's List, he played with the Tucson Elite club team.The son of

Sergio Gonzalez and Lauren Herrera, he has two siblings – Sergio and Melissa. He plans to major in sports management at USF.

Jackson Kramer, 5-10-165, Fr., Outfielder, Larchwood, Iowa/West Lyon HS
Notes: A talented outfielder from West Lyon HS, Kramer was named second team All-Siouxland Conference, first team all-district, first team All-Northwest Review and second team all-state in baseball. In 19 games, he hit .455 with a .657 on-base percentage and .636 slugging percentage. He scored 24 runs with 20 hits and 18 RBI. Kramer had four doubles, two triples and coaxed 21 walks. He was a standout in football, earning first team all-district honors and serving as team captain as a running back/safety. Kramer was named to the National Honors Society, A Honor Roll and received ABC Awards at West Lyon HS. The son of Kris and Tracy Kramer, he has three siblings – Jordyn, Kennedy and Reese. He plans to major in business (accounting).

Notes: Kristall is a standout outfielder from Perris, Calif. He played for the Canes West club team. He was named to the Honor Roll at Heritage HS. The son of Heidi

Kristall, he has a brother Parker. Kristall plans to major in criminal justice at USF.

Mason Leonard, 6-4, 210, Pitcher, Springfield, Minn./Springfield HS
Notes: Leonard was a standout at Springfield HS in football (wide receiver), basketball (center) and baseball. The son of John Leonard and Missy Mude, he has four siblings – Micheala, Mitchell, Charlotte and Hunter.

Joey Meurer, 5-7, 165, Outfielder/Pitcher, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS
Notes: A standout infielder, outfielder and pitcher at Woodbury HS, his 2020 season was canceled due to the CoVID-19 pandemic. Meurer, who also excelled in hockey, was Rookie of the Year for his club team, Great Lakes Baseball Academy. Active in community service, he has volunteered at his church's festivals and at the YMCA. He is the son of Eric and Kym Meurer and Jeff and Molly Rathbun who has a brother Jackson Meurer and sister, Lucy Rathbun.

Dane Small, 6-0, 180, Fr., Infielder, Martell, Neb./Norris HS
Notes -- A standout infielder at Norris High School, he played football, basketball and baseball for the Titans.  In basketball, he was a two-year letter winner and named honorable mention on the Eastern Midlands All-Conference team. He was a member of the Eastern Midland Conference champions and district champions in 2020-21 as a guard. A two-year letter winner in baseball, Small was a member of the Hickman Legion Post 105 state championship team in both 2019 and 2020. He also helped lead his team to the state semifinals.  Small was a member of the Show Choir two years and a Youth Sports Camp assistant as well as a football and baseball official. The son of Pat and Cara Small, he has two siblings – Saylor and Alec. He will major in business administration at USF.

David Swanson, 6-1, 185, Fr., Infielder, Lincoln, Neb./Southeast HS
Notes – A standout infielder from Lincoln, Neb., Swanson hit .308 in 30 games for his 2020 JC Brager American Legion team. He also was stellar in the field with a .978 percentage. He was a two-year letter winner and part of Southeast HS's Leadership Cadre. Swanson also played football and was a 2020 All-City honorable mention and the interception leader in the Heartland Athletic Conference. He volunteers at the FCA Banquet, Young Life and Honors Heroes. The son of Amy and Jeramie Swanson, he has two brothers Jacob and Andrew. Swanson will major in business at USF.

Notes  -- A standout pitcher for Roosevelt HS, Willis also played football. Willis played for the Post 15 Legion West squad. The son of Terry and Lisa Willis, he has a brother, Noah. Willis will major in criminal justice at USF.
