USF Baseball Head Coach Grant Hieb announces signing of eight standouts

USF now has a 2021 signing class of 17

SIOUX FALLS – University of Sioux Falls Head Baseball Coach Grant Hieb has announced that eight more student-athletes have signed and will continue their athletic and academic careers at USF in the fall of 2021.  With this group of eight, USF has 17 members in the 2021 signing class.
 
"This is an outstanding class," said fifth-year USF Head Coach Grant Hieb, whose baseball team tied a program record with 21 wins (21-21) and advanced to the NSIC Postseason Tournament for the second time in the DII era. "I'm excited to be adding these eight student-athletes to our incoming class. It's a talented group of guys that should have an immediate impact on our program. My coaching staff and I are excited to start working with them and the entire new class this fall," said Hieb,   .

The new signees include Aaron Braker, outfielder, Thornton, Colo.; Wil Fischer, C/1B, Norfolk, Neb.; Brady Kiehr, OF/P, Richmond, Minn.; Taylor Mayfield, C, Gilbert, Ariz.,  Connor McGonigol, pitcher Omaha, Neb.; Logan Parker-Sjoberg, P/3B, Mora, Minn.; Grayson Skinner, pitcher, Rapid City, S.D.; Zachary Whitesell, pitcher, Rapid City, S.D.; The earlier 2022 signings at USF included Tresden Gonsior, pitcher, Fullerton, Neb.; Andres Gonzalez, pitcher/outfielder, Sahuarita, Ariz.; Jackson Kramer, outfielder, Larchwood, Iowa; Gabriel Kristal, outfielder, Perris, Calif.; Mason Leonard, pitcher, Springfield, Minn.; Joey Meurer, outfielder/pitcher, Woodbury, Minn.; Dane Small, infielder, Martell, Neb.; David Swanson, infielder, Lincoln, Neb.; and Mitchell Willis, pitcher, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Aaron Brakel, OF, 5-8, 170, Thornton, Colo./Broomfield HS
A standout outfielder at Broomfield, Colo., Brakel was a three-year varsity starter who earned first-team All-Front Range League as an outfielder. As a senior, he had a .392 average (20-of-51) with five doubles, three triples, two home runs and 13 runs batted in. He had a .433 on-base percentage, 705 slugging percentage and 1.139 OPS. Brakel is a two-Academic All- State selection. He played with the Slammers Baseball club team. The son of Brett and Rachael Brakel, he is a sport management major. He has two siblings, Allie and David.

transfer from Northeast Community College, Fisher was a two-sport standout at Norfolk Senior High. He played catcher and infield in baseball and forward in basketball. Named All-Heartland Conference as a junior and senior, he was also named second-team all-state as a senior when he hit .327 with two home runs and a .473 on-base percentage. As a junior, he hit .289 with a .393 on-base percentage and three home runs. Fisher also hit .303 as a freshman. He also set the school record for walks in a season. In high school, Fisher was involved in the Panther Posse and FCA. The son of Bill and Sue Fisher, he has four siblings including Matt Fisher, who was a catcher at Nebraska-Kearney; Chris Fisher, who was a pitcher at Nebraska-Kearney, Sarah Fisher, and Kyle Goracke, who played football at Colorado School of Mines. He will major in business at USF.

Kiehr is a standout outfielder and pitcher from Richmond, Minn. As a senior he hit .452 average with a .489 on-base percentage. In addition, he had a 6-2 record with a 2.50 earned run average in 47 innings of work on the mound. Kiehr was a standout in football and baseball as he played defensive back and wide receiver in football and outfield/pitcher in baseball. The son of Jamie and Nichole Kiehr, he has a sister, Abby. He plans to major in business at USF.

Mayfield is a transfer from Chandler-Gilbert Community College (2019-21) where he hit .315 with a .605 on-base percentage, .406 slugging mark and .985 OPS. A two-sport standout at Gilbert Christian HS, he earned first-team all-region honors in 2018-19 and was the AIA Conference Defensive Player of the Year. In high school, Mayfield hit .369 with a .457 on-base percentage, and had a .507 slugging mark and .965 OPS. He was on the Principles List for a 4.0 grade point average in high school. The son of Chris and Cheramy Mayfield, he has four siblings including Caleb, Addisyn, Josiah, and Gracie. He will major in entrepreneurial studies with a minor in business at USF.

McGonigal is a transfer from McCook CC and William Jewell College. In 2019, he was the MCC Baseball Teammate of the Year, and named 2020 Region IX All-Academic. In 2020 at William Jewell, he was 1-0 with a 5.02 earned run average in 15.1 innings. A right-handed pitcher and outfielder for Omaha Burke HS in 2017, McGonigal had a standout 12-2 record with a 3.33 earned run averaged as a senior. He was tied for second in the state in wins in the summer of 2017. McGonigal was named OPS All-Conference in 2017, and earned Omaha World Herald All-Metro honorable mention in 2017. The son of Joe and Donna McGonigal, he will major in elementary education at USF. He has a sister Caitlin.
 
Logan Parker-Sjoberg, P, 6-3, 180, Mora, Minn./Mora HS
Parker-Sjoberg attended St. Cloud Technical Community College, Wisconsin-Stout and Dakota County Technical College before joining USF. He was a three-sport standout in football, hockey, and baseball in high school. In baseball, he played third base and pitcher. The son of Michael and Corinne Sjoberg, he has a sister, Jana. He will major in history education at USF.

A transfer from Miles Community College, Skinner is a standout right-handed pitcher. A two-sport standout at Stevens High School, he was a third baseman and pitcher in baseball and a shooting guard in basketball. He was named first-team all-state in baseball after hitting .517 with a 1.70 earned run average and 30 strikeouts across 50 innings as a senior. The son of Matt and Kati Skinner, he has eight siblings – Matthew, Caden, Ross, Gavin, Jess, Kail, Brooklynn and Easton. He will be a business/pre-law major at USF.

A transfer from Butler Community College, Whitesell had a 3.12 earned run average in eight games and 8 2/3 innings a year ago. A standout pitcher from Stevens HS, Whitesell recorded a stellar 25-2 record with a 2.08 earned run average in 181.3 innings across 39 high school games. In high school, Whitesell played basketball and football for the Raiders. The son of Kurt and Suzie Whitesell, he has two brothers, including Christian, who played soccer at Metro State in Denver; and Alex, who ran cross country and track at Iowa State. He plans to major in business at USF.
