KANSAS CITY – The University of Sioux Falls men's basketball team opened their season with a big, 75-72, win over #25 Southern Nazarene University in their first game of the Central Region Challenge.
WHAT HAPPENED
· The Cougars were led by Grad student Matt Cartwright with 23 points while going 9-14 from the field. Close behind was redshirt sophomore Jake Kettner, with 15 points.
· Juniors Jack Thompson and Connor Jackson put up 10 points each for the Coo.
· The Cougars passed the lead back and forth with the Crimson Storm, changing 15 times throughout the game. However, USF held the lead half of the second half, for a total of 12:34.
SIOUX FALLS LEADERS
· Cartwright and Kettner led the Cougars in points, collecting 38 of USFs 75 on the game.
· Kettner led USF with five assists followed by Thompson with three.
· Cartwright also led Sioux Falls with two blocks against the Storm.
· Zane Alm and Jack Thompson both picked off two steals on the game, along with Chase Girde and Noah Puetz each with one.
TEAM STATISTICS
· USF went 26-48 from the field, 8-14 beyond the arch and 15-18 from the free throw line on the game.
· The Cougars capitalized on Storm turnovers with 22 points coming from turnovers.
UP NEXT
Sioux Falls (1-0) takes on Pittsburg State tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in their final game of the Central Region Challenge. The Gorillas fell to Winona State 50-60 Friday night, and are led by head coach Jeff Boschee.
