WINONA, MINN. – With the clocking wind down,
Danielle Schaub found an opening in the lane and converted a lay-up with less than a second to play as the University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball Team (14-10, 9-8 NSIC) earned a dramatic 53-52 road win over Winona State (11-12, 8-11 NSIC) on Friday night (Feb. 11).
With the victory, USF moved to 9-8 in the NSIC and into third place in the NSIC South. The Cougars, which will play at Upper Iowa on Saturday at 3:30 pm, stands 14-10 overall. With the victory tonight, USF ended a four-game losing streak as they swept Winona State (won, 74-54 at USF earlier) this year and recorded a win in Winona for the first time.
"It was a great defensive battle and I am proud of how we stayed the course when we were struggling offensively in the first half," said USF Head Coach
Travis Traphagen, who won his 265
th game at USF. "I am proud of everyone on the team to help us get back on the winning track. The shot by Danielle (Schaub) was really a great moment for this team," he said.
Junior guard
Dallie Hoskinson played a lead role for USF with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds while also dishing three assists and recording a steal and blocked shot. Hoskinson now has six double doubles at USF and 16 in her career while upping her double-digit scoring total to 12 at USF and 32 in her career. USF also had 10 points from freshman guard
Olivia Gamoke, who hit 2-of-4 from three-point range. Gamoke now has five double-digit scoring games with the Cougars. In addition, the Cougars had seven points and two rebounds from freshman guard
Brecli Honner.
WSU took a 16-15 lead after the first quarter but was outscored by USF, 14-7, in the second period as the Cougars built a 29-23 lead at halftime. The Warriors had a 14-13 edge in the third quarter and 15-11 margin in the fourth quarter but USF made the key basket at the end.
In the final minute, WSU had baskets from Emma Fee, who finished with a game high 24 points and added 11 rebounds, and Taylor Hustad to take the 52-51 lead with 13 seconds to play. Then, Schaub hit the game-winning basket as the clocked ticked toward zero.
Overall, USF was 20-of-52 from the field for 38.5 percent and made 7-of-20 from three-point range for 35 percent. USF, which was 6-of-9 from the foul line, had a 30-26 advantage on the boards. WSU hit on 20-of-50 field goals for 40 percent and was 4-of-15 from three-point range for 26.7 percent along with 8-of-12 from the foul line. WSU had a 30-to-22 edge in points in the paint and 23-to-17 margin on points over turnovers but the Cougars had a 7-to-4 edge in made three-pointers which proved important.
Scoring Summary -
WSU took a 16-15 lead by the first quarter break as the Warriors made 6-of-12 shots for 50 percent and 4-of-5 foul shots. USF had 10 turnovers which helped WSU hold a 11-to-4 margin in points off turnovers. USF had a solid shooting percentage at 58.3 percent and a 10-9 lead on the boards but turnovers hurt.
Krystal Carlson and Honner scored inside for a 4-2 lead at the 8:02 mark. Then, Hoskinson made a lay-up for a 6-2 lead with 6:36 to play. WSU answered with a three from Emily Kieck and jumper from Fee to take the lead. After USF took a 15-9 lead, including a three from
Madison Wuebben, the Warriors closed the quarter on a 7-0 run for a 16-15 advantage.
After WSU took a 21-16 lead, USF closed the second quarter on a 13-2 run to lead at the break, 29-23. Hoskinson had eight points to lead USF, which was 12-of-28 from field for 42.9 percent but just 2-of-11 from three-point range for 18.2 percent. USF had an 18-10 margin in rebounds, including six off the offensive glass. The Cougars also had an 18-12 margin in the paint with a 7-0 advantage in second chance points.
Early in the second quarter, WSU added to their lead as they extended their run to 10-0 as they took a 19-15 advantage. After missing its first seven shots of the quarter, USF closed fast by going 5-of-8 from the field and hitting a triple.
Down 21-16, Carlson hit a jumper to end the cold spell and draw USF within, 21-18. Gamoke's three-pointer with 1:44 to play gave USF a 25-23 as part of a 9-2 run. Then, Honner's basket inside with four seconds left helped USF take the six-point lead (29-23) at the break.
The Warriors had a 14-13 scoring edge in the third quarter as USF still led by a 42-37 margin. The Cougars hit 4-of-10 from the field and 2-of-4 from three points range along with 3-of-5 foul shots. WSU made 6-of-15 field goals for 40 percent and was 1-of-2 from three-point range.
WSU opened the third quarter on a 7-3 run to cut the lead to 32-30. After USF took a 36-30 lead, WSU had four straight to draw within 36-34. Then, Hoskinson hit a triple for a 39-34 advantage with four minutes to play.
In the fourth quarter, the Cougars had a four-minute scoring drought as WSU rallied. A three from Mattie Schimenz cut USF's lead to 42-40 with eight minutes to play. Fee gave WSU a lead at 44-42 with two straight baskets. USF answered with some defense leading to offense.
Megan Fannin's steal led to a three from Hoskinson for a 45-44 lead with 5:11 to play.
Schimenz tied the game at 45 by making 1-of-2 at the foul line. Then, Fannin hit a triple for a 48-45 lead (4:46). After WSU tied the game on a three (Caitlin Riley), Honner knocked home a triple for a 51-48 lead with 3:21 to play. After Fee made a basket inside to draw WSU within one, Taylor Hustad had a lay-up with 25 seconds left for a 52-51 lead. After a foul and a timeout, USF set up a play for Schaub, whose shot hung on the rim for a second before dropping home and giving USF an important league victory.
