Winterhaven, FL – The University of Sioux Falls softball team wrapped up day two of The Spring Games Tournament in with a decisive 7-1 victory in the first game against Nyack University and shutout 5-0 victory vs. Findlay University on Saturday.
Game One: USF 7, Nyack 1
The Cougars bats stayed hot yet again as they win their 5
th game in a row, notching a 7-1 victory over Nyack University.
The Cougars capitalized early scoring a run on an error committed by Nyack in the 1
st inning. The Cougars poured on six runs in the 2
ndinning to break the game wide open in their first game of the day.
Kylan Straight,
Kylie Madrid,
Reese Holzhueter, and
Taryn Wagner contributed by knocking in runs on the day & keeping the pressure on, capitalizing on Nyack's three errors in the game, and continuing to put the ball in play to get runs across the board.
The Cougars had 10 hits on the day, four of which came off the hot bat from freshman
Reese Holzhueter who went 4-4 on the day with one run scored and an RBI.
Kylie Madrid followed, swinging the stick well going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI of her own.
Hanna Cress and
Bailee Lampman kept Nyack in check from the circle only allowing four hits and surrendering only one run on the day and striking out four batters.
Game Two: USF 5, Findlay 0
The Cougars again keep the bats hot and receive stellar pitching from the circle to get their sixth straight victory and stay undefeated in tournament play at the Spring Games in Florida.
USF continues to put pressure on opponents early on in games as
Kylie Madrid hit a line drive to right field, scoring
Lexie Swift to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1
st inning. It was in the 2
nd inning when the Cougars broke things open when
Taryn Wagner hit a solo home run, followed by a
Lexie Swift RBI single, and finished the 2
nd with a two-run RBI triple from senior third basemen
Kylie Madrid for a 5-0 lead.
The Cougars had 8 hits on the day, 18 total between the two contests and was led in game two with three hits and 3 RBI by
Kylie Madrid and two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI by
Lexie Swift.
From the circle, USF wraps up 14 innings today only surrendering one run combined between the two contests.
Hanna Cress allowed only four hits, 1 walk, and surrendered zero runs for the complete game shutout victory for the Cougars. The Cougars put together stellar back-to-back performances by
Bailee Lampman and
Hanna Cress to keep the Cougars undefeated in the tournament through the first two days.
The Cougars stay unbeaten at The Spring Games tournament with four straight victories (six total) as they continue their win streak in neutral site games. USF has gotten contributions both offensively and defensively from not just the veteran leadership but have seen the freshman group step up in big spots during the 2022 campaign as well. A well-rounded effort by the USF bats and gloves as the team raises their team batting average and lowers their ERA in the four contests in Winterhaven, Florida.
