USF Baseball to host Bemidji State in three-game series in Brandon

Cougars hosting third straight site reversal series in the NSIC

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – With the recent inclement weather impacting field conditions, the three-game series on April 9-10 between Bemidji State and Sioux Falls has been moved to First National Bank Field in Brandon, S.D. USF (15-15, 7-8 NSIC) and BSU (4-23, 1-12 NSIC) will open the series with a single nine-inning game on Saturday, April 9 at 6 pm. The two NSIC teams will play a doubleheader at noon and 2 pm on Sunday, April 10.  With the site reversal, USF will host the games with Bemidji State designated as the home team. It is the third straight "road" series that has been a site reversal and hosted by the Cougars.

Quick Preview
After opening 4-0 with a sweep of doubleheaders against Southwest Baptist, the Cougars, directed by sixth-year Head Coach Grant Hieb (88 career wins – 65 NSIC wins) dropped three-of-four games against Metro State-Denver. USF went 3-4 in Florida over spring break, and 2-1 against Minnesota Crookston as NSIC play opened. They split a doubleheader with Minot State before winning 2-of-3 against Southwest Minn. State on March 26-27. USF has lost five of seven and sit at 15-15 overall and 7-8 in the NSIC (10th).  

Series Record
The Cougars and Beavers stand 12-12 al-time with USF winning the last two match ups. The two teams stand 11-11 overall in NSIC play while USF is 7-4 at home and 3-6 on the road. In the first match up, BSU took an 8-1 win on Feb. 16, 2013. USF, which has won 6-of-10, defeated BSU, 9-3, on March 28, 2021. USF also won 4-0 on March 28.  In the opener, Caleb Ditmarson threw his first career shutout and complete game as he finished with seven strikeouts and just two walks. Trey Hubers had three hits and two runs scored.  In the second game, USF had five batters with two includes including a three-hit game from Tyler Blackburn. Alex Krout and Payton Livingston worked the mound for USF. BSU's last win was an 18-11 decision on March 27, 2021, despite a home run and five RBI from Ryan Bernardy.

How Things Stand for USF Baseball 
Redshirt freshman Noah Christenson has continued his strong start to the season by leading USF in hitting .398, which ranks third in the NSIC. The redshirt freshman from Buffalo, Minn., who was named the NSIC Player of the Week three weeks ago, has a team-high 43 hits (1st, NSIC) and 25 runs scored (9th, NSIC) along with a .491 slugging plus a .431 on-base percentage. Christensen, who has 11 multi-hit games (tied with Tyler Cate for team lead) has seven doubles and a team-high 25 RBI (10th NSIC), eight stolen bases with 53 total bases. Twice he has four hits in a game and has six multi-RBI games.

USF has six players hitting .300 on better which has placed USF fourth in the league with a .288 batting average. Aside from Christenson, other USF hitters over .300 include Tyler Cate at .336; Brady Klehr, .337; Kyle Gulbrandson, .333; and Ben Serie, .309. With six hits in his last 14 at bats, Klehr, who has six multi-hit and six multi-RBI games, has jumped to .337 on the year.  He has two home runs, seven doubles, 29 hits and 17 runs scored with a .488 slugging mark. He has three games of three RBI and two three-hit games.

Cate, who has 27 multi-hit games, including 11 this year, is slugging at .393 with a .429 OBP. Cate, who has two career four-hit games and has a five-walk game this year, has 36 hits, six doubles and nine RBI. Ben Serie is hitting at .309 with a team-high five home runs.  He also has 20 RBI, 52 total bases, .402 OBP and a .536 slugging mark, which leads USF. Also for USF, Trey Hubers is hitting .286 with 21 RBI. He has 52 career RBI and 20 multi-hit games. Senior Grant Lung is hitting .264 and now has 101 career RBI, 165 career hits. Lung has 45 multi-hit games along (38 two-hit games, seven three-hit games, two four-hit games, and one five-hit game). Lung has 23 multi-RBI games (nine two-RBI games, nine three-RBI, and a career high six-RBI game in 2019)
As a team, USF has scored 187 runs for 6.1 runs per game and rank fourth in the NSIC in runs scored. The Cougars have 265 hits (3rd, NSIC), as well as slugged 16 home runs. USF has team marks of .388 slugging and .378 on-base percentage with 52 stolen bases in 68 attempts. In situational stats, USF is hitting .245 against lefthanders and .303 vs right hand throwers. With runenrs on base, USF has a .314 mark with a .261 average with two outs.

Breaking it down for USF
USF has scored 33 runs in the first inning, a team-best 38 in the fifth inning, and 25 in the sixth inning. Against left-handed starters, USF is 4-4 with a 11-11 mark vs right-handers. When leading after six innings, USF is 11-1 and is 5-0 after leading through seven innings. When USF has scored at least six runs or more, they are 7-0. USF is 8-6 when scoring in the first inning and 9-4 when they score first.  
On the mound, USF has recorded 204 strikeouts in 225 innings with 103 walks. On the hill, USF is led by Alex Krout with a 2.93 earned run average in nine appearances. He has a league best five saves. Among the starters, Caleb Ditmarson is the leader with a 3-2 record and 3.86 earned run average in six starts. He has two complete games and a shutout along with a team-high 40 strikeouts. Ditmarson, who has gone at least five innings in five of his six starts, has four starts with at least seven strikeouts with a career high 10 in a seven-inning win against SMSU.   Senior starter Andrew Maslowski has a 3-2 record with 24 strikeouts in 27.2 innings.
