Cougars Split with Winona State in Conference Opener

April 2, 2023

WINONA, MINN. – The University of Sioux Falls softball team split their opening conference series against Winona State earlier today. The Cougars picked up their fourth ever victory against the Warriors today and their second in six games. Sioux Falls now moves to 10-11 on the year and 1-1 in the NSIC.

GAME ONE – L, 7-6

As the visitors on the scoreboard, the Warriors jumped out to an early lead with a two-run homerun of the bat of Carly Engelhardt. The Cougars then held WSU to four shutout innings while recording six runs led by Kylie Madrid with three RBIs.

While the Cougars trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Madrid went yard with a two-run shot over the center field fence to give USF their first lead of the game. Rylie Jones singled to right center to bring in Reese Holzhueter and give the Cougars a 4-2 lead going into the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Madrid drove in Makenzie Weber while Kennedy Thomas brought in Madrid to put the Coo up 6-2.

After a tough sixth inning for the Cougars, the Warrior's five run sixth inning was just too much for Sioux Falls to overcome.

With the bases loaded, Kelsey Pauli stepped to the plate and brought in the first run for the Cougars off a four pitch walk. Reese Holzhueter led the pack with two RBIs following a double to right center to put USF up 3-0 at the end of four.

The Warriors closed the gap in the fifth inning, but Sioux Falls quickly shut the door following an RBI single to left field by Kait Van Der Zwaag.
