Cougars Fall To Moorhead in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Cougar softball team wrapped up their second weekend of conference play against the Minnesota Moorhead Dragons today falling 4-3 and 5-4 in extra innings. Sioux Falls held an overall series record of 15-2 against Moorhead going into today's matchup and now sits 15-4 overall. USF currently sits at 14-15 on the season and 5-5 in NSIC play.

GAME ONE – L, 4-3

Sioux Falls struggled to get their bats going to start game one as they had just three hits until the sixth inning while leaving five stranded on the base path.

The Dragons had a big four-run third inning before the Cougars tagged on three runs in the top of the sixth. Kait Van Der Zwaag connected on her second homerun of the weekend with a one-run shot over center field to start the inning.

With two outs, Kelsey Pauli picked up her first hit of the weekend to start a two out rally for the Coo. Meghan Jochimsen returned to run for Pauli just before Kennedy Thomas sent her home on a deep single to left field. Damaris Cuevas stepped in to pinch hit for the Cougars while scoring pinch runner, Emma Barta, to bring the game within one.

Sioux Falls finished the game with 3 runs off of 7 hits with no errors.

Cuevas and Van Der Zwaag led Sioux Falls each with one RBI in game one while Thomas led with three hits.

Hanna Cress started in the circle for the Cougars where she threw for 2.2 innings before Van Der Zwaag stepped in to finish game one. The two combined for five strikeouts and no walks all while facing 27 batters.

GAME TWO – L, 5-4

Moorhead scored two in the bottom of the first, but Sioux Falls returned in the second to go up 3-2.

With the bases loaded, Lexie Swift drove in a two RBI single before stealing second on a first and third situation. Van Der Zwaag singled to deep left center scoring Rylie Jones from third before ending the inning.

The Cougars saw their largest lead of the day come in the top of the third when Kylie Madrid scored off a hit by Megan Lawson and an error by the second baseman.

With the score 4-2, MSUM added runs in the bottom of the third as well as the fifth to tie the game up at five apiece.

USF took MSUM to 10 innings before falling 5-4 of a walk-off homerun.

Swift (2) and Van Der Zwaag (1) led USF in RBIs during game two of the day as they combined for three runs batted in. Swift, Van Der Zwaag and Madrid each led with two hits in game two as well.

Van Der Zwaag threw for 4.0 innings before Cress returned for the remaining 5.1. Van Der Zwaag had the only strikeout for the Coo in game two as the two pitchers faced 40 batters throughout today's matchup.

UP NEXT

The Cougars will be back in action as they return home to take on Augustana on Tuesday, April 11 at Bowden Field on the campus of Augustana University. First pitch is scheduled for 2pm followed by game two at 4pm.
