Women's Wrestling Tabs Two Placers in Final Open of the Regular Season

FREMONT, NEB. - USF Women's Wrestling rounded out their regular season at the Warrior Open hosted by Midland University. The Cougars landed two place winners in Brinley Green and Zoe Adam.

At 101-pounds, Ava McNeal dropped her opening round match to Karina Vang of Doane in a 1:08 pin before advancing on a bye and a forfeit. McNeal fell in a 0:52 pin to Britley Lopez of Chadron State finishing the day 1-2 and the regular season 14-8.

Paw Hobza was one of just seven wrestlers at 109-pounds and advanced two rounds on byes before falling to Bemnet Tesfa of Hastings in a 4:40 pin and to Renith Montiel in a 1:46 pin. Hobza went 0-2 on the day and moves to 12-12 on the year.

Paige Denke started the day strong at 116-pounds with a 1:21 pin over Rodiat Adeduntan of Iowa Central followed by a 10-0 tech fall over Laura Lincoln of Missouri Valley. Followed by a 1:39 pin over Lorelei Wydra, Denke advanced to the semi-finals before falling to Mayangelie Colon of Grand View in a 1:30 pin and to Laura Lincoln in a 1:48 pin. Denke finished the day 3-2 and advances to 15-6 on the year.

Teila Peters and Mackenzie Armagost competed at 130-pounds for the Coo today. Peters finished the day 2-2 while Armagost finished 3-2. Peters opened the day with a 5:44 pin over Brooke Cox of Doane before falling to Madeline Santana of Missouri Valley in a 5:38 pin while Armagost fell in the opening round to Ashlee Palimo in a 1:02 fall. 

In the 130-pound consolation bracket, Peters defeated Jacie Bedell in a 10-0 tech fall followed by a bye before ending the day in a 3:31 fall to Ashlee Palimo. Armagost defeated Abigail Atibagos in a 10-0 tech fall before landing a quick 0:45 pin over Avery Sondall followed by another 2:50 pin over Anna Sondall. Armagost fell to Ashlee Palimo in a 2:09 pin. Peters is now 20-12 while Armagost advances to 13-14.

At 136-pounds, McKenna Hendrickson opened the day with a 1:32 pin over Eny Bravo Torcios of Midland followed by a 9-6 decision over Andrea Jones of Doane. Hendrickson fell in the quarterfinals to Tabith Wood of Hastings in a 3:36 pin before defeating Brianna Membreno in a 4-0 decision and falling to Bridgette Sotomayor in a 12-2 tech fall. Hendrickson finished the day 3-2 and is now 14-12 on the year.

Brinley Green opened her day with a 2:57 pin over Savannah Turner of Hastings at 143-pounds followed by a 12-2 tech fall over Princess Altsisi of Iowa Central and a 5:28 pin over Cara Cheng of Missouri Baptist to advance to the semi-finals. Green fell to Serenity De La Garza of Missouri Valley in a 6-3 decision before defeating Arionna Beatty of Northland CC in a 13-2 tech fall and Savannah Turner of Hastings in a 2-1 decision to finish the day 5-1 with a third place finish. Green is now 22-11 on the season.

Ciana Grate also competed at 143-pounds today starting the day with a quick 0:25 second pin over Harley Scheck of Northwest Kansas. Grate fell to Maria Slaughter of Missouri Valley in a 0:36 pin followed by a 10-0 tech fall defeat to Haidyn Snyder of Grand View. Grate finished the day 1-2 is now 11-13 on the year.

At 191-pounds, Zoe Adam fell to Olivia Brown of Grand View in a 7-2 decision during the opening round. Adam went on to battle back with a 10-0 tech fall win over Nevaeh Hast of Morningside, a 4:03 pin over Thereisa Va'afuti and a 10-0 tech fall over Skyler Bruno of Waldorf and a 2:32 pin over Makaela Simpson of Iowa Western. Adam fell to Jasmin Ballesteros in a 2:07 fall to finish the day 4-2 with a fourth place finish while ending the regular season 27-7.

USF will head south to compete in the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships Regional Tournament. Sioux Falls will compete in Denton, Texas on Sunday, February 25 for a spot in the National Championships.
