DENTON, TEXAS - USF Women's Wrestling competed in the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships - Region VI Tournament today landing nine place winners and four earning rides to the NCWWC National Tournament. Out of 10 teams, the Cougars also finished the day with a 5th place team finish with 91.0 points.
At 101-pounds, Ava McNeal dropped her opening round match to No. 4 Jennesis Martinez of Colorado Mesa in a 10-0 tech fall followed by a bye and a 10-0 tech fall loss to Gina Bolognese of Simon Fraser. McNeal ended the day with a 3:21 pin over Britley Lopez of Chadron to finish 5th overall and 15-10 on the season.
Paw Hobza was 0-3 on the day at 109-pounds falling in a 10-0 tech fall to Heavynne Robles-Wright of Chadron in the quarter finals. Hobza fell to Candice Brickell of Adams State in a 10-0 tech fall before ending the day falling to Sloan Stewart of Texas Woman's University in a 2:57 fall. Hobza finished 8th on the day and 12-15 on the year.
Paige Denke went 1-2 on the day to finish 7th at 116-pounds. Denke fell to Jaia Ashley of Schreiner University in a tough 14-13 decision followed by a 15-5 tech fall defeat to Julia Petryna of Minot State. She finished the day with a 1:19 pin over Mia Lozano of Texas Woman's to finish the season 16-8.
At 123-pounds, Rei Ogden finished 2-2 with a 7th place finish. Ogden fell to Ileah Brown of Schreiner in a 3:50 pin followed by a quick 0:53 pin over Rylie McCabe of Adams State. Kelsey Louen of Simon Fraser defeated Ogden in a 14-10 decision before Ogden finished the day receiving a forfeit win over Arianne Korish of Minot State. Ogden finished her freshman campaign 27-11.
Teila Peters and Mackenzie Armagost competed at 130-pounds for USF today. Peters finished the day 2-2 while Armagost finished 1-2. Peters opened the day with a 1:08 pin over Alexis Hanks of Texas Woman's before falling to Laura Alcantor Soto of Simon Fraser in a 1:45 fall. Peters responded with a 14-4 tech fall over Lexy Basurto of Schreiner before falling to Kaydence Boyde of Colorado Mesa in a 10-4 decision. Peters finished 4th on the day to advance to become the first USF women's wrestler to advance to the NCWWC Tournament while moving to 22-14 on the season.
Armagost picked up a first round win over Brianna Johnson of Adams State with a 3:19 pin before falling to Boyde in a 1:14 fall and to Basurto in a 1:15 fall. Armagost finishes her season 14-16.
At 136-pounds, McKenna Hendrickson became the second wrestler to advance to the National Tournament going 4-1 on the day with a 3rd place finish. Hendrickson fell to Livier Dubon of Texas Woman's in a 4:43 fall before going on a 4-0 run to close out the day. She picked up a 1:07 pin over Marisa Rimbert of Adams State followed by a 3:42 pin over Brooke Wieczorek of Schreiner, a 4-3 decision over Annika Lee of Chadron and a 4:34 pin over Dubon for 3rd. Hendrickson advances to 18-13 on the year.
Brinley Green punched her ticket to Nationals with a 2nd place finish while going 2-1 at 143-pounds. Green opened the day with a 5-2 decision over No. 14 Erica Schroeder of Colorado Mesa and a 3-3 decision over Haleigh Lematta of Minot State to advance to the championship match before falling to Alice Rickett of Linfield in a 2-0 decision. Green advances to 24-12 on the season.
Ciana Grate also competed at 143-pounds today falling to Ricket in a 1:58 pin and to Valerie Glenn of Colorado Mesa in a 5:26 pin. Grate finished the season 11-15.
Aliyah Villarreal went 2-2 at 155-pounds to finish 7th on the day. Villarreal opened the day falling to No. 15 Celina Cooke of Colorado Mesa in a 2:01 fall followed by a forfeit victory over Ayana Medina of Linfield. Villarreal fell to Azana King of Schreiner in a 1:34 pin before ending the day with a 1:41 pin over Emma Meadows of Chadron. Villarreal finished her season 6-12.
At 191-pounds, Zoe Adam was the final Cougar to advance to the National Tournament finishing the day 2-2 with a 4th place finish. Adam defeated Faith Perez of Texas Woman's in a 10-0 tech fall during the opening round before falling in a 7-1 decision to No. 9 Julia Richey of Simon Fraser. Adam responded with a 1:04 pin over Mia Howell of Texas Woman's before dropping her final match to Jayleen Sekona of Colorado Mesa in a 0:56 pin. Adam advances to regular season 29-9.
