ST. CLOUD, MINN. - Sioux Falls Softball opened their season today as they took on Black Hills State and Northern State on day one of the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament. The Cougars took game one, 4-2, over the Yellow Jackets before falling, 7-1, to the Wolves in game two.
GAME 1 - BLACK HILLS STATE
Maddi Duncan made her DII debut on the mound with nine strikeouts on the day while recording her first win as a Cougar. Duncan pitched all seven innings giving up just one walk and three hits.
Emma Barta and Hannah Fry kept the bats hot during game one with three hits apiece along with a double and RBI each. Damaris Cuevas also contributed with a double and a RBI herself.
Barta and transfer Alannah Naumann caused some havoc on the basepath today, each with a stolen bag.
USF put up 10 hits against the Yellow Jackets with runs coming in the third, fifth and seventh innings of play.
GAME 2 - NORTHERN STATE
Freshman Olivia Ott made her collegiate debut today followed by senior transfer Kate Kotlarz. Sophomore pitcher Campbell Petrick also made her collegiate debut throwing for 4.2 innings while facing 21 batters. Petrick gave up just one walk and two runs.
Freshman Riley Schwisow popped off with a the lone double and RBI in game two while USF left four runners stranded. Schwisow recorded two hits throughout the game while Barta and Naumann recorded one apiece. Mackenzie Weber recorded the lone stolen base for the Coo in game two.
The Cougars tallied four hits against the Wolves with their only run coming in the bottom of the first after Schwisow scored Naumann on a double.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on St. Cloud State at 12pm followed by Bemidji state at 4pm.
