Swanson and Klingensmith Named USF Athletes of the Week

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Following the past weekend's performances, USF Athletics is pleased to announce Emily Swanson as Female Athlete of the Week and Beau Klingensmith as Male Athlete of the Week.

Swanson had a historic day for USF Track and Field at the NWMSU Bearcat Open on February 1. She scored 3,841 points in the Pentathlon to break her own school record in this event. Her score is good enough for 4th in the nation. Swanson also set 3 NCAA Provisional Marks with her Pentathlon score, a time of 8.82 in the 60m Hurdles, and a jump of 1.70m in the High Jump.

Klingensmith had a standout weekend for USF Men's Wrestling. On Thursday vs. Augustana he picked up USF's only win of the night with a pin. He pinned AU's John Babineau in 37-seconds at 133-pounds. On Saturday against Minnesota Moorhead he picked up another win by pin. He pinned Thomas Carillo in 2:09 to move to 13-6 on the year.

 

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

·         USF Softball got their season going this past weekend going 3-3. There were many standouts for the team starting with Pitcher Maddi Duncan. She started 3 games and completed all 3 while having an ERA of 1.94 and a WHIP of 1.11. She threw 18 Innings and recorded 16 strikeouts and an Opponent Batting Average of .225.

·         Another standout for Cougar Softball was Emma Barta. She went 7/26 at the plate for the weekend for a .438 average. She also had an OPS of 1.091, .500 slug%, .591 OB%, and went 2-3 on steals.

·         Freshman Riley Schwisow got her college career off to a good start. She had a .353 average, 1.097 OPS, .647 slug%, and .450 OB%. She went 4-4 at the plate against Bemidji State on Feb. 4.

·        USF Track and Field had many standouts this weekend including Emily Swanson. Another top performer we Khot Juac who won the Women's 3000m. She set the meet record with a time of 9:39.19. Khot also set an NCAA Provisional Mark and broke her own school record with this time.

·        Another standout for USF Track was Tamia Horton. She tied the school record in the 60m. Her time of 7.55 is a PR and set an NCAA Provisional Mark.

·        Annika Aho also set an NCAA Provisional Mark this weekend for USF Track. She won the 800m with a time of 2:15.38 which is a PR and 3rd best time in school history.

·        A few other standouts for USF Track were those that won events. Miles Olofson won the Men's 800m run. Morgan Gehl won the Women's 1000m. Caleb Rivera won the Men's 3000m. Abbi Webb took home first in the Long Jump as well.

·        Paul Garcia and Beau Beavers each picked up wins for USF Men's Wrestling on Saturday. Garcia defeated Minnesota Moorhead's Hunter Heim with a 19-4 tech. fall in 6:39. Beavers picked up a 20-5 tech. fall win over Hunter Hayes on MSU Moorhead.

·        USF Women's Wrestling had a great weekend at the Grand View Open. Brinley Green won her weight class going 5-0. She had 3 tech. Falls and 2 decisions. Zoe Adam also won the 191-pound weight class. She had 2 pins, 1 tech. fall, and 1 forfeit. Paige Denke also had a solid day taking 3rd in her weight class. She went 4-1 with her wins coming via 2 tech. falls, 1 pin, and 1 bye.

·        Danielle Minsaas of USF Women's Basketball led the team in scoring for both games this weekend. Against Winona State on Friday she had 12 points and 5 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. On Saturday vs. Minnesota State she had 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 made 3s in 33 minutes played. Her totals in assists, minutes, and made 3s against Mankato were all career highs.

·        USF Men's Basketball got 2 standout performances from Jack Thompson over the weekend. On Friday against Winona State he had 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists in 35 minutes played. Against #2 Minnesota State Thompson had 18 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals in 37 minutes of action.
