Sioux Falls Spits with Crookston in Weekend Series

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - USF Softball split with Minnesota Crookston this afternoon. The Cougars took game one 10-8 in 9-innings of play before falling in game two 6-4.

GAME 1 - W, 10-8

USF scored first in game one when Madison Grant recorded a sac fly to score Taryn Wagner in the second before Crookston responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Alannah Naumann sent a solo shot to left field to close the gap to 2-3 in the third before Sioux Falls tacked on four runs in the fourth. Damaris Cuevas brought in Meghan Jochimsen while Naumann brought in Megan Lawson before Riley Schwisow doubled down the right field line to score Naumann and Cuevas.

UMC answered with a run in the fifth and sixth and again in the seventh after Hannah Fry flew out to score Schwisow to make it a 7-7 ball game.

In extra innings, Cuevas once again brought in Jochimsen on a double to center field before the Golden Eagles responded with one of their own in the bottom of the eighth.

Grant called game with a two out single to right field to score Taryn Wagner and Jayden Haley.

Maddi Duncan started in the circle for the Coo, pitching 4.0 innings with five strikeouts in 21 batters faced. Olivia Ott came in to close out the game in 5.0 innings pitched with two strikeouts and 24 batters faced to pick up the win and save.

GAME 2 - L, 6-4

The Cougars scored two in the top of the first with Cuevas scoring Naumann and Schwisow on another double to center field to give USF an early 2-0 lead.

Crookston added one in the bottom of the first inning before adding five in the bottom of the second to take a 6-2 lead.

Grant scored Rylee Riesberg on a sac hit in the fourth before scoring Jochimsen and Cuevas in the sixth.

Campbell Petrick got the start, throwing 1.2 innings before Kate Kotlarz finished with 4.1 shutout innings and three strikeouts in 20 batters faced.

OVERALL

Cuevas led the Coo on the day going 5-for-7 at the plate with four doubles and four RBI. Grant paved the way with five RBI on the day going 2-for-4 at the plate. 

All four pitches contributed today with Duncan leading in strikeouts (5) followed by Kotlarz with three and Ott with two. The staff overall recorded a 6.60 ERA on the day.

UP NEXT

USF will head to Mankato to take on the Mavericks on Tuesday, April 2 at 2 & 4pm. The Cougars will return home next weekend to host Northern State and MSU Moorhead on Saturday and Sunday.
