Cougar Softball Splits Against Northern State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - USF Softball split their doubleheader against Northern State today falling 4-5 in a 12-innings game one before taking game two 8-5.

GAME 1 - L, 5-4 (12 INNINGS)

Sioux Falls jumped out to a 1-0 start in the second inning when Taryn Wagner brought in Rylee Riesberg on a sac fly to left field before NSU answered with two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth.

In the bottom of sixth, Wagner singled to center field to score Meghan Jochimsen while Damaris Cuevas followed suit to score Riley Schwisow in the seventh to tie the game at 3 apiece.

With two runs by NSU in the top of the 12th, the Cougars comeback was cut short after Emma Barta scored Megan Lawson to finish the game 5-4.

Throwing all 12-innings and with a strong defense behind her, Maddi Duncan faced 50 batters while forcing 17 groundouts, 13 flyouts and four strikeouts and giving up just three earned runs.

GAME 2 - W, 8-5

Wagner once again got the Coo going in game two when she doubled to center field to score Alannah Naumann who previously opened the game with a triple.

Cuevas singled down the left field line to score Schwisow in the bottom of the third to tie the game at two before getting another rally going in the fifth with a single to score Schwisow yet again. Lawson doubled down the left field line to score Wagner and Jayden Haley just before Jochimsen gave the Coo a 6-5 lead with a single to bring in Riesberg.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wagner scored Naumann while Lawson scored Schwisow to give Sioux Falls an 8-5 lead.

Campbell Petrick started in the circle for USF, throwing 3.1 innings and facing 22 batters before Kate Kotlarz came in on relief to throw 3.2 shutout innings and face 16 batters.

OVERALL

Wagner led the Coo at the plate today going 4-for-8 at the plate with four RBI and a double. Schwisow and Lawson also recorded doubles on the day while Naumann had the lone triple.

Kotlarz, Duncan and Petrick combined for 19.0 innings pitched with six strikeouts and a 3.79 combined ERA. Kotlarz finished her third shutout appearance with her 3.2 inning performance today.
