Second-Half Push Not Enough in Hard-Fought Clash With the Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In a physical and tightly contested rivalry match at Morstad Field, Sioux Falls battled throughout but fell 1-0 to Augustana on Friday afternoon. The Cougars created several strong chances in the second half but couldn't find the equalizer after conceding just before halftime.

THE BASICS

Date: Friday, October 17, 2025
Score: Augustana 1, Sioux Falls 0
Records: USF 5-6-1 (3-5-1 NSIC), AU 8-2-2 (6-2-1 NSIC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Augustana controlled much of the opening half and broke through in the 43rd minute when Grace Katter scored off a feed from Avery Heinz to put the Vikings in front 1-0.

Following the halftime break, Sioux Falls responded with a strong second half, pushing the pace and creating several scoring opportunities. Addison Van Zee led the attack with five shots, including one that struck the upper crossbar in the match. Chloe Wilson added two shots, one on target, while the Cougars maintained extended possession in the attacking third.

Head coach Joe DeMay praised his team's adjustments after halftime and their ability to fight back into the match:

"We lacked collective cohesion in the first half that allowed Augie too much time and space to put us under pressure doing what they do well. Giving up the goal right before half added pressure but the second half we responded to that and were more proactive, aggressive and linked up between the lines. That allowed us a lot more time in the front third which led to good chances that ended up on the crossbar, the post, but unfortunately we couldn't get the final touch across the line."
