MARSHALL, Minn. – The University of Sioux Falls Volleyball team made program history tonight, defeating No. 17 Southwest Minnesota State in four sets, 3-1 (13-25, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24), inside the PE Gymnasium.
The victory marks the Cougars' first-ever series sweep over SMSU and handed the Mustangs their first home loss of the 2025 season. With the win, USF improves to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in NSIC play, while SMSU falls to 13-6 and 6-6 in NSIC matches.
Match Summary
After dropping the opening set 25-13, the Cougars regrouped with a dominant response—rallying behind sharp ball control and balanced attacking to take the next three frames. USF hit .361 in the second set and .294 in the third, then closed out the match with a dramatic 26-24 win in set four to complete the upset.
Sioux Falls' offensive rhythm and defensive resilience set the tone throughout the night, with five players recording eight or more kills and the Cougars holding SMSU to just a .201 hitting percentage.
Cougar Leaders

Courtney Holsteen led the charge with 12 kills, hitting .250 and adding three digs and a block assist.

Abby Haus matched Holsteen with 12 kills on an efficient .391 hitting percentage, adding three blocks for 13.5 total points.

Tatum Godinez delivered 10 kills, six digs, two blocks, and 11 points, providing steady play from start to finish.

Sadie Voss recorded nine kills and a team-high 19 digs, adding a service ace and 10 points.

Ella Walker and Haley Wolfe each posted four blocks at the net to help slow down the Mustang offense.

Setters Elise Gillen and Liz Kopp combined for 44 assists, while Gretchen Volk contributed two service aces and three digs in the back row.
As a team, Sioux Falls hit .232 with 54 kills, 62 digs, and eight team blocks, while holding the Mustangs to 52 kills and a .201 efficiency with three sets all less than .189.
Historic Win
The victory not only marked USF's first series sweep over SMSU in program history, but also snapped the Mustangs' home winning streak—making it a defining moment in the Cougars' 2025 campaign and in the NSIC standings.
