Cougars Close out Warrior Open with Six Placers

FREMONT, NEB. – The USF Women's Wrestling team competed in the Warrior Open today hosted by Midland University. The Cougars had six place winners on the day led by freshman, Lanna Walter, and sophomore, Teila Peters, placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. 

103 – Ava McNeal opened the day with a 10-0 tech fall over Vanessa Tellez of Friends University before falling to Zoe Omura of Midland in a 10-0 tech fall. In the consolation bracket, McNeal defeated Sandra Gutierrez of Southeast Community College in a 1:00 pin before falling to Trinity Motter of Friends in a 1:34 pin. McNeal finished the day 2-2 to move to 8-8 on the year. 

110 – Paw Hobza finished the day 1-2 moving to 5-10 on the season. Hobza opened the day with a 2:30 pin over Anna Kos of Minnesota North Itasca before dropping the next two matches in a 10-0 tech fall to Sarah Pineda of Missouri Valley and a 1:15 pin to Bailee Cash of Iowa Western. 

117 – Rei Ogden fell in her opening match to Madison Kalamau in a 10-0 tech fall before battling her way back through the consolation bracket. Ogen defeated Jade Hacket of Waldorf in a 1:36 pin followed by a 10-0 tech fall over Mora Petterson of Doane. Falling in the consolation semi-final to Hailey Medina of Iowa Western, Ogden took 5th place with a forfeit win over Joseline Perez of Iowa Western to move to 18-10 on the year. 

117 – Lanna Walter finished 2nd with a 3-1 record on the day. Walter opened the day with a quick 0:44 pin over Alejandra Loredo Apodaca of Southeast Community followed by a 5-2 decision over Mora Peterson of Doane and a 10-0 tech fall over Joseline Perez of Iowa Western  before falling in the championship match 14-1 to Doane's Julia Breeden. Walter moves to 10-9 on the year. 

124 – Paige Denke took 5th going 3-2 on the day. Denke fell in the quarterfinal round to Brooklyn Hermel of Grand View in a close 8-6 decision before defeating Chloe Sokolik of Hawkeye Community College in a 1:50 fall and Ashton Hofeling of Southeast Community College in a 2:37 pin. Denke fell to teammate Teila Peters in a 16-5 tech fall before securing 5th place with a 2:21 pin over Wachipi Hamelryck of Oklahoma City to advance to 10-10 on the season. 

124 – Teila Peters finished the day 4-1 with a 3rd place finish moving to 16-9 on the year. Peters opened the day with an 11-0 tech fall win over Amanda Durrant of Waldorf followed by a 13-2 tech fall over Jasimen Ortega of Southeast Community. Falling in the semis in a 3:00 pin to Emily Paulino of Midland, Peters closed out the day with a 16-5 tech fall win over teammate Paige Denke and a 12-1 tech fall over Brooklyn Hermel of Grand View.  

131 – Mackenzie Armagost opened the day with an 11-0 tech fall over Joselyn Mccunn of Iowa Western before falling to Xochitl Mota-Pettis of Missouri Valley in a 1:37 pin. Armagost battled back with a 3:57 pin over Taylor Hood of Midland and a quick 0:18 pin over Hallie Carter of Snow before dropping her final two matches in a 2:01 pin to Cindy Sepeda of Grand View and a 1:23 pin to Ashlee Palimo of Doane moving to 18-13 on the season. 

138 – Diann Smith finished 1-2 on the day. Smith fell to Neve Barragan of Waldorf in a 4:47 pin before pinning Cieanna Ficken of Hawkeye Community. Smith fell to Adrienna Turner of Grand View in a 10-0 tech fall to move to 11-12 on the year. 

145 – Ciana Grate went 0-2 on the day to move to 10-14 on the season. Grate fell to Joel Makem Ratzinger of CSB Women's Wrestling Club in an 11-0 tech fall and in a 1:40 pin to Nevaeh Leonard of Southeast Community. 

145 – Addaly Pals-Miller went 2-2 on the day falling in a 2:02 pin to Makena Schramm of Midland in the opening round. Pals-Miller picked up a forfeit win over Angelica Castillejo of Waldorf along with an 8-7 decision over Anisa Moreno of Friends before falling to Paityn Covolo of Iowa Western in a 1:02 pin. Pals-Miller moves to 8-15 on the year. 

145 – Aliyah Villarreal fell to Paityn Covolo of Iowa Western in a 3:52 pin and to Brianna Berge of Northland Community move to 2-5 on the season. 

207 – Zoe Adam finished 5th going 3-2 on the day to advance to 13-10 on the season. Adam fell in the opening round to Martha Hinneh of Southeast Community in a 1:15 fall before defeating Estrella Vasquez-Gutierr of Chadron in a 2:28 pin and Lilianna Martinez of Doane in an 11-0 tech fall. Adam fell to Taylor Rickley of Hastings in a 5:39 pin before defeating Angel Lee of Friends to take 5th place. 


UP NEXT
USF will head to the NCWWC Regional VI tournament in Indianola, Iowa on Saturday, February 22nd in hopes of returning a few to the national stage on March 7th and 8th.
