Cougars Drop Two to Wayne State in Doubleheader

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Cougars (22-25, 18-14 NSIC) fell in both games of an NSIC doubleheader to the Wayne State Wildcats (25-16, 21-11 NSIC) on April 23, 2025, at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne, Nebraska, losing 4-1 in Game 1 and 5-4 in Game 2. Despite early leads in both contests, the Cougars couldn't hold off Wayne State's timely hitting.

Game 1: Wayne State 4, Sioux Falls 1

The Cougars struck first in the opening inning when Ben Serie singled to drive in Dominic Vogel, taking a 1-0 lead. Wayne State held Sioux Falls scoreless after the first inning, limiting the Cougars to six singles scattered over seven innings. The Wildcats were scoreless until the fourth inning, when they erupted for four runs on a bases-clearing double and an RBI single, taking a 4-1 lead that held as the final score.

Brady Baur started for Sioux Falls, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and seven Ks. Myles Rees provided 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, facing six batters without allowing a hit and striking out one.

Game 2: Wayne State 5, Sioux Falls 4

Sioux Falls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single from Serie scoring Vogel and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Gouldin plating Isaac Bonner. A sacrifice fly by Vogel in the second extended the lead to 3-0. Wayne State chipped away in the third with a run on a sacrifice bunt, then took the lead in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer, making it 4-3. A throwing error in the seventh allowed Wayne State's final run, pushing their lead to 5-3. In the Cougars' 9th, Drew Miller doubled, and Nolan Drossel reached on a groundout, advancing to second as Miller was tagged out at home after a wild throw. Vogel singled to move Drossel to third, and Bonner's single scored Drossel, cutting the deficit to 5-4, but the rally stalled, and Wayne State held on for the win.
