Heule’s Walk-Off RBI Lifts USF to Split with Wolves on Senior Day

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Sioux Falls softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Northern State at Sanford Diamonds, falling 4-2 in game one before bouncing back with a dramatic 9-8 walk-off victory in game two.

The Cougars moved to 26-25 overall and 14-12 in NSIC play, using a strong offensive response in the nightcap to close the regular-season series on a high note.

Game One: Northern State 4, Sioux Falls 2

Game one opened as a tight defensive battle before Northern State broke through in the fourth inning with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

Sioux Falls answered in the fifth, capitalizing on Northern State miscues. Sammie Radish doubled through the left side to score Brianna DeLorenzo and tie the game before Meghan Jochimsen reached on a throwing error that allowed Radish to score, giving USF a 2-1 lead.

Northern State tied the game in the sixth and then took control in the seventh, scoring two unearned runs to pull ahead 4-2. The Cougars were unable to answer in the bottom half.

Maddi Duncan went the distance in the circle, allowing just one earned run while striking out five. Radish led the offense with two hits and an RBI.

Game Two: Sioux Falls 9, Northern State 8

Sioux Falls came out aggressive in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning behind a two-run double from Radish and an RBI from Addison Heule.

The Cougars added two more in the second on a two-run single from Jochimsen, building a 5-0 lead. After Northern State cut into the deficit in the third, USF responded in the fourth with a two-run double from Emma Kristof and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Kyra Knudtson to make it 8-2.

Northern State rallied with five runs in the fifth and tied the game in the sixth, setting up a dramatic finish.

In the bottom of the seventh, Sioux Falls pushed across the winning run when Heule grounded out to first, scoring DeLorenzo and securing the 9-8 walk-off win.

Kristof led the Cougars with two hits and two RBI, while Jochimsen, Radish, Knudtson and Heule all drove in runs.

Key Cougars

  • Sammie Radish – Three hits and two RBI across the doubleheader, including run-scoring doubles in both games.
  • Emma Kristof – Two doubles and two RBI in game two.
  • Meghan Jochimsen – Drove in two runs in game two and helped spark the early offense.
  • Addison Heule – Recorded three RBI in game two, including the walk-off RBI in the seventh.
  • Maddi Duncan – Threw a complete game in the opener, allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts.
  • Ava Mejia – Gave the Cougars four strong innings in the start, allowing just two runs while helping USF build an 8-2 advantage.

Senior Day Celebration

Today's doubleheader also served as Senior Day for the Cougars, who recognized seven student-athletes in Addison Heule, Meghan Jochimsen, Lauryn Foudree, Ava Mejia, Andie Suhai, Kyra Knudtson and Maddi Duncan.

The senior class has helped shape one of the most accomplished eras in program history, contributing to record-setting performances, milestone achievements and continued growth for USF softball. Fittingly, the group capped Senior Day with a memorable walk-off victory in the nightcap to earn a split with Northern State.

Several seniors played pivotal roles in the comeback win, including Jochimsen's two-run single, Knudtson and Kristof's middle-order production, Heule's walk-off RBI, and a strong start from Mejia in the circle.
