MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Sioux Falls softball team dropped a pair of NSIC contests today, falling to Minnesota State in a doubleheader at the Maverick Sports Dome. The Cougars were shut out in both games, losing 8-0 in game one and 3-0 in game two.
Minnesota State used a big inning in the opener and timely hitting in game two to secure the sweep, while the Cougars were limited to just five hits across the two games. Sioux Falls moves to 19-16 overall and 7-3 in NSIC play following the setback.
Game One: Minnesota State 8, Sioux Falls 0
A tight pitchers' duel through three innings quickly shifted in the fourth, as Minnesota State capitalized on miscues to break the game open.
After a scoreless start, the Mavericks plated seven runs in the fourth inning, with just four hits in the frame but aided by three Cougar errors. A three-RBI double from Broderick highlighted the inning, while additional runs came via hit-by-pitch and defensive miscues to push the lead to 7-0.
Minnesota State added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo home run to extend the lead to 8-0.
Despite the final line, Maddi Duncan was strong early, recording 10 strikeouts across her complete-game effort. She allowed just six hits, with five of the eight runs charged as earned.
Offensively, the Cougars were limited to just two hits, both coming from Kyra Knudtson, who finished a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.
Game Two: Minnesota State 3, Sioux Falls 0
Minnesota State struck early in the nightcap and relied on pitching to complete the sweep.
The Mavericks took advantage of early traffic in the first inning, scoring two runs on a two-RBI single to grab a 2-0 lead they would not relinquish.
From there, Lauryn Foudree settled in and kept the Cougars within striking distance, going the distance while allowing three runs on seven hits.
Sioux Falls threatened in the middle innings, putting runners on in both the fifth and sixth, but was unable to deliver the timely hit.
