SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Sioux Falls softball team split todays doubleheader against Southwest Minnesota State at the Sanford Diamonds, rolling to a record-setting 22-1 win in game one before dropping a tightly contested 2-1 decision in game two.
The Cougars moved to 21-18 overall and 9-5 in NSIC play after one of the most explosive offensive performances in program history to open the day. In game one, Sioux Falls set a new program record with 22 runs scored and 17 RBI, while also tying a school record with six doubles.
Game One: Sioux Falls 22, Southwest Minnesota State 1
Sioux Falls wasted no time taking control and turned the opener into a historic offensive outburst.
The Cougars struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Kyra Knudtson brought home Meghan Jochimsen with a sacrifice bunt before Hanna Raethz doubled to center to make it 2-0.
Then came a second inning that rewrote the record book.
Sioux Falls exploded for 20 runs in the frame, sending wave after wave of hitters to the plate and piling up hits, walks, extra-base knocks, and pressure on the bases. Charlie Pryor started the scoring in the inning with an RBI fielder's choice before Emma Kristof ripped a two-run double and Knudtson followed with an RBI double. Addison Heule added an RBI single, Sammie Radish delivered a two-run single, Morgan Linstad drove in another with a single, and Brianne Lawver added a two-run single of her own.
Pryor later delivered one of the biggest swings of the inning with a three-run double to right center, and Jochimsen capped the scoring with a two-run homer to right center that pushed the Cougars to a stunning 22-0 advantage.
By the end of the inning, Sioux Falls had set a program record for runs scored in a game (22) and RBI in a game (17) while matching the school mark with six doubles.
Southwest Minnesota State broke up the shutout in the fourth on an RBI groundout, but Maddi Duncan remained in command throughout the rest of the contest. The senior tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits and one run while the Cougar defense kept the Mustangs from building any momentum.
Sioux Falls finished with 13 hits in the game, with nearly every spot in the order contributing to the record-setting win.
Game Two: Southwest Minnesota State 2, Sioux Falls 1
After the offensive fireworks of game one, game two turned into a much tighter battle.

Southwest Minnesota State answered in the fourth when Emma Humpal doubled to left to drive in the tying run. The Mustangs threatened again in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Sioux Falls escaped the jam and kept the score even.
The decisive run came in the seventh. SMSU loaded the bases once more and drew a go-ahead walk to take a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars made one final push in the bottom of the seventh. Jochimsen singled and Kristof reached on a fielder's choice before Kyra Knudtson and Sandra Ribich each worked walks to load the bases with two outs.
