With six games left in the regular season, the Cougars volleyball team (18-14, 6-4 GPAC) is feeling good and ready to make their mark in the 2010 postseason.
The Cougars went 2-1 this past week, recording wins against Dakota State and Concordia, but dropping a three-set match to Nebraska Wesleyan. Over the past few weeks, USF has been playing solid and putting together some great sets.
I think that we are playing very well right now," Cougars head coach
Lisa Mathes-Peters said. "Our hitters have been taking some good swings on the ball and our middles are blocking the ball all the time. "
All season long, USF has been led by their "Fab Five," a senior class that includes
Danielle Roers,
Samantha Haffke,
Kayla Rolsma, Amber Nieuwsma and Rachel Henney. The quintet recently helped the Cougars battle back from a 0-2 hole to defeat Hastings College in a thrilling five-set match.
"My seniors have grown up together and spent many, many hours of hard work on the courts, sharing the victories and losses together," Mathes-Peters said. "I know that they want to make their last season in a Cougars uniform one to remember."
With six conference matches left, the Cougars still have a lot of work to do. They currently sit in fifth place in the GPAC and have the potential to move up in the standings prior to the conference tournament.
They travel to Mount Marty College on October 20 and will play host to Dordt College on October 22 (this game will also be Senior Night for the Cougars). The Cougars then hit the road for three matches against Dakota Wesleyan, Briar Cliff and Morningside. The regular season finale on November 2 pits the Cougars against fourth-ranked Northwestern College.
"The next two weeks are huge for us," Mathes-Peters said. "It's time to really put it all together. We have to finish every point."
