The University of Sioux Falls football team defeated Doane College (1-4 overall, 1-3 Great Plains Athletic Conference) 64-0 in rain soaked conditions Saturday night. Senior quarterback
Lorenzo Brown (Bristol, Conn.) had an almost flawless day as he connected with
Jon Ryan for two touchdowns on the evening.
USF's first drive saw a heavy combination of Brown and senior running back Ryan Lowmiller (Crystal Lake, Ill.), as the Cougars moved the chains on each of their first three plays. First, Brown hit junior receiver Jon Ryan (Watertown, S.D.) on a 12 yard out-route, followed by 16 yard dash by Lowmiller. Then Brown and Lowmiller connected on a 17 yard pass, followed by an eight yard Kristian Porter (So.; Harwarden, Iowa) run. Facing their first second down of the game, Brown hit Ryan in the middle of two defenders for a 25 yard touchdown.
A three-and-out by the defense gave the Cougars their second possession of the first quarter , and USF capitalized on the situation. After a Lowmiller 11 yard run on first down, Brown had a short run, followed by one of his two incomplete passes on the night. Then Brown hit Ryan for his second touchdown reception of the night, this time for 26 yard pass that resemble the first score of the night.
With a 14-0 lead, the Tigers fought back with a steady drive of their own, taking the ball 65 yards on 13 plays. However, a missed 25 yard field goal attempt by Tiger kicker Andrew Nielson maintained USF's shut out chances.
Backed up on their own 20 yard line, the Cougars went straight for the big play, turning a play-action call into a 59 yard pass completion from Brown to junior receiver Alex Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.). A six yard pass to junior receiver Brad Theilen (Nashua, Iowa) followed by Brown's second pass incompletion led to a third down, but a 11 yard pass to Ryan gave the Cougars the first down and the ball inside their own five yard line. On first and goal, Lowmiller took a inside run and jumped outside, scoring on a stand-up four yard run.
A three and out and short punt by Doane gave the Cougars back the ball. Brown once again found receiver Anderson for a large gain, this time connecting for 47 yards. Anderson had three Tigers on him, but was able to win the jump ball for his second reception of the night. Anderson finished the night with two receptions for 106 yards. Two plays later, Brown found tight end Austin Van Hove (Garretson, S.D.) for the freshman's third touchdown of the season, this one for nine yards.
On the next drive, Porter would run for gains of 16 yards and 19 yards on his second and third carries of the night, before Lowmiller found pay dirt with a 17 yard sprint into the end zone. It was Lowmiller's second touchdown of the game and eighth of the season.
For his last pass attempt of the evening, Brown found an open Scott LeBrun (Sr.; Dell Rapids, S.D.) near the side. The senior would side-step a defender then take the ball 18 yards for a touchdown, Brown's fourth pass touchdown of the night.
A Ismael Small ( Belle Glade, Fla.) exclusive drive gave the senior 46 yards on five carries and his second touchdown of the season. USF would take a 49-0 lead into half time.
With second string players taking all snaps in the second half, the Cougars stuck to the ground game most of the second half as freshman Mitch Dunbar (Cambridge, Minn.) gained 74 yards and scored a touchdown while sophomore Jacob Crowl (Ashton, Iowa) had his first 100 yard plus effort of the season, netting 112 yards and a touchdown.
The defense also scored for the third game this season, as the Cougars swarmed Doane running back Garr Schroeder in his own end zone.
Senior Mike Hartley (Rapid City, S.D.) had a fantastic game from his defensive line position as he totaled 5.5 tackles, three of which were for a loss, broke-up a pass and found the quarterback for a sack. Junior linebacker Mike Hill (Dante, S.D.) also found the quarterback for a seven yard loss, while junior defensive back Dan Schmeichel (Odessa, Minn.) returned his second interception of the season 10 yards.
The Cougars will have a short week next week as they travel to Briar Cliff (1-4, 1-3) next Thursday, October 8 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
