The University of Sioux Falls men's hoops team (21-8 overall, 13-5 GPAC) completed the regular season sweep of No. 10 Northwestern College (21-7 overall, 14-4 GPAC) with a 75-71 win in Orange City, Iowa Saturday night. No. 20 ranked USF defeated NWC 87-80 earlier this season and will be the No. 2 seed in the GPAC tournament for the second straight season.
Sophomore
David Maxwell (Parkston, S.D.) led the Cougars in scoring for the fifth time this season with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman
Keith Cutler (Platte, S.D.) scored 13 points in his first start of the season and senior
Ronnell Grant (Tucson, Ariz.) tallied 14 points with six assists and four rebounds.
A three pointer by NWC's Walker Seim gave the Red Raiders a 12 point lead midway through the first half. The Red Raiders continued to control the scoreboard that ended with a 38-28 advantage at halftime.
USF started chipping away at the scoring deficit immediately in the second half, pulling within two points in just two and half minutes of play. A jumper by Maxwell gave USF their first lead in 26 minutes of game time with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
The game would be tied six times over the next six minutes but seven straight successful free throws by USF in the last 44 seconds gave the Cougars their 21st win of the 2010-2011 campaign.
USF earned a bye for the first round of the GPAC playoffs and will host the winner of No. 7 seed Morningside and No. 10 Hastings this Thursday, Feb. 24 at 8:00 p.m. in the Stewart Center. NWC is the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
