Senior forward
Tasia Murray scored two second-half goals to lead USF to a 3-1 road victory over Northern State University late Friday night.
It's the first win of the season for the Cougars (1-2).
Close to 600 fans attended the late night (11:00 p.m. kickoff) match, which also served as the Wolves' fourth annual Coaches vs. Cancer PINK NIGHT. The final horn did not sound until after 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
After a scoreless first half, Northern State put a one on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute when NSU midfielder Liz Royce narrowly beat USF's sophomore keeper,
Samantha Maybon, to a crossing pass, just touching the ball past Maybon as it trickled into the corner of the net for the game's first goal.
The Cougars responded to the Wolves' tally with sharper passing and more sustained offensive opportunities. In the 68th minute, senior forward
Tasia Murray (Sioux Falls/Lincoln) scored on a free kick from 19 yards out just outside the box to tie the match.
The game remained knotted at one until the end of the second half, when the Cougars put goal number two on the board at 86:57 when senior
Sarah Stoebner (Sioux Falls/Roosevelt) crossed the ball through the NSU defense to Murray, who went opposite corner for the goal that would stand as the game-winner.
Freshman
Desiree Parmenter (Temecula, Calif.) added an insurance goal when she broke away from the Wolves' defense and blasted a low ball into the opposite corner.
Cougar keeper Maybon (Omaha, Neb.) made six saves in between the pipes to notch her first collegiate win.
For the game, USF was outshot by the Wolves 16-10. NSU also held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goals.
The Cougars' next match in Aberdeen will be later today, as they take on Viterbo University at 5:00 p.m.
