The University
of Sioux Falls jumped on Dakota State University early Tuesday night at the
Stewart Center (Sioux Falls, S.D.) ensuring they would not only avenge their
blowout loss in Madison, S.D. last season, but return the favor. A season best
72% second half shooting performance was too much for the Trojans, as they were
dismantled by Cougars, 83-57. With the win, USF extends its win streak to five
and remains unbeaten (7-0) at home.
USF
set the tone early; making five of their first seven shots to take go up, 10-6
with 15:34 to go in the first half. Their hot shooting would only continue.
After
starting the game in the paint, the Cougars decided to show off their much
improved range by knocking down three consecutive three's to help start a 12-2
run. Cutler's 3-pointer near the 11 minute mark gave USF a 22-10 lead.
Seconds
later, six different players took park in a 13-2 USF run to give the Cougars
their largest lead of the first half at 20 points (35-15). The Trojans chipped
away at their deficit cutting it to as low as 14, but USF held a 44-25
advantage at the break.
The
Cougars were the definition of balance in the first half, outscoring DSU 18-6
in the paint, 16-2 on the bench and 15-6 from behind the arc. Not to mention
USF connected at a 57% rate, while holding the Trojans to just 28% shooting
before intermission.
DSU
chances only became worse in the second half, where USF went 18-25 to shoot a
very impressive 72% from the floor.
USF
hot shooting was contagious and everyone wanted to get involved. At one time
the Cougars converted 12 consecutive field goals to stretch their lead to 30.
Fans saw nine different USF players score in the second half, as the Cougars
picked up another dominating win at home.
With
extended minutes, USF's bench accounted for 33 points, while DSU's posted 16.
The Cougars also owned the boards, as they outrebound the Trojans, 31-24. USF
has now won the battle on the boards in nine of their last 10 contests.
The
Cougars finished with three double-digit scorers in James Rader, Keith Cutler
and A.J. Holland. Rader had a perfect night. He went 7-7 from the floor to lead
USF with 14 points. Cutler's damage came in the first half, where he made five
of his nine attempts to post 12 points. Holland nearly recorded the Cougars'
third double-double this season, as he finished with 11 points and nine
rebounds.
Up
next, USF takes a two day break before returning to the court Friday when they
host South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Tip-off is scheduled for
