The
University of Sioux Falls recorded their third sub-60% shooting performance this
season to outscore South Dakota School of Mines Friday night and secure a 72-56
victory, snapping a four-game win streak by the Hardrockers in Rapid City, S.D. With
the win, the Cougars move to 13-8 while SDSM&T drops to 13-11.
After
starting the same five players in each of the last 10 games, USF adjusted the
lineup and it proved to be beneficial for the Cougars.
It
was freshmen Bryan Kielpinski and Bretson McNeal in the first half. The two
took full advantage of their first starts, combining to go 7-10 from the field
to account for 21 of USF's first half points.
The
Hardrockers actually claimed the lead on two separate occasions during the
first half, near the 16:00 and 13:00 minute marks. However, David Maxwell's
jumper tied it up with 12:15 to play and sparked a 15-4 run by the Cougars.
USF
finished the half strong and a big 3-pointer from McNeal with just under a
minute to play gave them a 13 point lead that would make for a 43-30 advantage at
the break.
The
Cougars opened the second half on a 14-4 run, stretching their lead to 23
points on multiple instances, which is as large as it would be. USF maintained
a 20-point cushion the next 13 minutes of the game, only dipping below the mark
in the final 60 seconds of the contest, as the Cougars recorded their 10th
win in their last 11 games.
USF finished
the game connecting on 63% of their attempts, while holding the Hardrockers to
41% shooting. They also outshot SDSM&T at the line, where went 12-14, as
the Hardrockers went 15-22.
In
addition to the shooting supremacy, the Cougars outrebounded their opponent for
the 18th time this season.
The
Hardrockers had three players in double-digits in Michael Dietz, Tanner Friesen
and Nathan Jacobson. Friesen lead SDSM&T with 12 points, while Jacobson and
Dietz recorded 11 and 10, respectively.
USF's
adjustments to the lineup proved to be of value, specifically in the front
court, as Holland and McNeal accounted for two of the Cougars' three players in
double-figures. McNeal went 4-6 from downtown and was a perfect 2-2 at the free
throw line to set a new career high of 16 points. James Rader, who normally
starts, played a very inspired game off the bench, posting 16 points and five
rebounds in 22 minutes of play. He finished 7-8 from the floor. Holland was
perfect from the field tonight. He connected on three of three attempts from
behind the arc and one of one from the field to finish 4-4 and 2-2 at the
stripe for 13 points, one shy of his career high. He also added three rebounds
and a new career high with five steals.
The
Cougars return to action tomorrow when they face Black Hills State in
Spearfish, S.D. Tip-off is set for 7p.m.
