Baseball Drops Twinbill at No. 2 Concordia-Irvine

The University of Sioux Falls baseball team suffered a twin bill sweep at the hands at no. 2 (NAIA) Concordia University-Irvine on Wednesday afternoon at Eagles Field.

With the losses, the Cougars fall to 3-16 overall. CUI improves to 19-8.

CUI jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game, as the Eagles got two runs on two hits in the second inning off USF starting pitcher Mark Vig and never looked back. The Eagle nine scored three runs in the third, eight in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Vig tossed three innings and took the loss for the Cougars. The redshirt junior allowed five runs on seven hits with three walks. Chris Nichols provided three innings of relief and gave up 12 runs on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Andrew Brooks earned the complete-game shutout for the Eagles. The sophomore righty scattered three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Cougars tallied just three hits in the game. Zach Ireland, Damian Kardas and Derek Fischer each recorded a single.

USF catcher Dylan Dwyer did all he could to give USF a boost in the nightcap, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars lost to the Eagles 3-1.

CUI opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the third. Matt Palmer notched a lead-off single off of USF starter Noah Coleman and eventually scored on a fielder's choice.

USF got the run back in its half of the next inning. Kardas went ahead in the count 2-0 and drove the next pitch to left-center for a lead-off single. After consecutive outs, Dwyer singled to right field and Fischer drew a full-count six pitch walk to load the bases. Kardas scored when Eagle starter Dylan Tye was charged with a balk.

Both teams went quietly in the fifth frame.

After USF went down 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth, CUI pushed across two runs in its half of the inning. Eagle Ryan DiMascio reached base on a fielder's choice and touched home on a triple by Dave Peterson, who would score on a bunt.

The Cougars had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh, but the rally fell short when Brandon Madsen struck out swinging and Austin Goodenow grounded to third to end the game.

Coleman was tagged with the loss for USF. The sophomore southpaw gave up three runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work.

Tye went wire-to-wire in the win for the Eagles, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. USF collected five hits in the nightcap.

Dwyer finished the game 2-for-3 with two singles. Goodenow, Ireland and Kardas each had a single.

USF returns to action tomorrow against Cal State-Dominguez Hills.
