Softball USF Athletics

Cougars Blanked Twice by Wayne State, 1-0 & 4-0

The USF softball team ventured into northeast Nebraska on Tuesday afternoon for a pair of non-conference games with the Wildcats of Wayne State.

The visitors' bats were silenced as Wayne State swept USF at home, 1-0 and 4-0 at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne, Neb.

The Cougars fall to 10-6 overall while the Wildcats improved to 15-11.

A valiant effort by USF starting pitcher Bailey Bouman wouldn't be enough in game one, for the Cougars managed just five hits and were shutout by the Wildcats, 1-0.

A triple by Wayne State's Dani Sandel would stand as the only extra-base hit in the game.

The lone run of the game was scored in the third inning when Wildcat Kassie Nurton led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored when Jordan King reached on a USF fielding error.

The Cougars out-hit the Wildcats, 5-4. USF left five runners on base while the Wildcat nine
stranded six runners.

Bouman (5-3) took the loss, allowing one unearned run on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Wayne State freshman Sara Scheffert recorded five strikeouts in the five-hit shutout.

USF's offense was again held in check once in game two, as the Cougars were out hit by the Wildcats 12-4 in the 4-0 defeat.

Wayne State touched USF starter Amanda Walters for two runs in the first inning as Vicki Nielsen and Bormann each recorded RBI singles to score Jordan King and Kaiti Williams. The Wildcats extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third when Nielsen doubled and scored on a Bormann single up the middle and would tack on an insurance run in the sixth inning when Nielsen singled to left field and later scored on a pinch-hit double from Kristen Martinson.

The Cougars' best opportunity to score came in their half of the fourth when Noelle Roden reached on a fielder's choice and Jenna Turner followed with a two-out single through the left side, but Elliott Lenz flied out to second base to end the threat.

Third baseman Priscilla Quintana recorded three of the Cougars' four hits, all singles. Turner finished 1-for-3 with a single.

For the Wildcats, Vicki Nielsen was 3-3 with double, two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman starting pitcher Kelcie Bormann helped her own cause, as she was 2-2 at the plate with two RBI and pitched a four hit shutout.

Amanda Walters (5-2) was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Bouman tossed .2 innings in relief, allowing one hit and also recorded a strikeout.

The Cougars will return to the diamond on Thursday, when they travel to crosstown rival Augustana College. First pitch of the afternoon twin bill is slated for 5:00 p.m.
