The University of Sioux Falls softball team ended an eight-game skid with a Sunday split at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.
In game one, Katie Larson delivered an RBI double off the wall in right field to drive in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning as the Cougars claimed a 6-2 extra-innings victory.
The Bulldogs salvaged a split with a 9-1 (six innings) win in the nightcap.
USF improved to 13-19 with the split. Truman State sits at 23-29.
Bailey Bouman started the opener and went the distance for the Cougars to improve to 7-10. Bouman allowed two runs on four hits with five walks and fanned five Bulldogs.
The teams combined for zero runs and five hits through the first five innings. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Bouman singled to center field before third baseman Priscilla Quintana drilled a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence to put the Cougars on the board first with a two run bomb. The round tripper is Quintana's fifth of the season, tying USF's single season record (Maggie Gorman, 2001).
Three Cougar errors allowed the Bulldogs to rally in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. The frame opened with back-to-back USF errors to put runners at second and third for TSU's Liz Leath, who singled to left field to slice the Cougars' lead to 2-1. Two batters later, an error by the USF shortstop allowed the runner at third to scoot home and send the game to extra innings.
The tie-breaker rule was in effect as Shae Reinke was placed on second base to start the top of the eighth inning. On a 3-2 pitch, Larson doubled to right field to plate Reinke and put the visitors in front 3-2.
The Cougars cushioned the lead for Bouman, scoring three more runs in the frame with a fielder's choice, Kellen Dewey's RBI keystone hit and a one run single by Shelby Stewart.
It turns out that one run was all Bouman needed, as the sophomore righthander retired the side on eight pitches to clinch the 6-2 win.
Quintana finished the game 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Stewart had two hits. Larson and Dewey each tallied an RBI double.
The Cougars out-hit the Bulldogs 7-to-4 and only posted one strikeout in the game.
Game two would belong to Truman State and freshman pitcher Kelsea Dorsey as the Bulldogs exploded for nine runs on 15 hits and Dorsey tossed a one-hit gem to blast the Cougars 9-1 in six innings.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after Reinke was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error by the Bulldog third baseman. Truman State answered with three runs on three hits in its half of the frame. After a lead-off error by the Cougar second baseman, Kelsey Bollman knocked an RBI double. On a 3-0 count, Leath homered to center field to put the Bulldogs in front 3-1.
Truman State tacked on two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 9-1 and put the mercy rule into effect.
Dorsey (16-9) dominated the Cougar lineup from start to finish, allowing one unearned run on one hit with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Walters (5-8) took the loss for USF, giving up seven runs on 12 hits. Dewey provided 0.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
Jenna Turner tallied the Cougars' lone single.
The Cougars will welcome the Dakota State Trojans to Harmodon Park on April 24 for their final two home games of the season (Senior Day). First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
