Cougars Split with Wayne State

The Sioux Falls baseball team (9-17, 4-8 NSIC) split with Wayne State College (15-7, 7-1 NSIC) on a chilly Friday afternoon at Harmodon Park. The Cougars dropped game one 3-2 (eight innings) but bounced back to take game two, 5-1.

A little small ball by Wayne State and strong Wildcat pitching weren't a good combination for the Cougars in game one. The Cougars managed just three hits over the final three frames as Wayne State pulled away for a 3-2 victory in extras.

Wayne State used a bunt single and a passed ball in the eighth to plate the game-winning run.

Zach Ireland went 2-for-4 and drove in one run for USF. Noah Durkin added an RBI double in the third while Dylan Dwyer went 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Wayne State ace Tadd Johansen (6-0) earned the victory, going seven innings despite allowing eight hits and two walks. Nick Ragan tossed a scoreless eighth for the Wildcats to picked up his third save of the season.

USF starting pitcher Eric Brothers (2-3) took the loss. He gave up three runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a squeeze bunt with runners at the corners that was followed by an RBI base knock to right field.

USF responded with one run in the bottom of the frame. Durkin's two-out double plated Dwyer, who opened the frame with a left field single.

The Cougars tied the game in the fourth when Ireland's well-placed bunt scored Keith Cutler, who had singled up the middle.

USF had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Cutler flied out to send the game into extra frames.

The Wildcats led off the eighth with a walk and bunt single. They quickly loaded the bases to chase Brothers with one out in the inning. Andrew Christensen relieved Brothers before Justin Beranek laced the game-winning single to center field.

USF never trailed in the nightcap. The game was scoreless until the fourth, when the Cougars plated four runs on an RBI double by Ryan Fobes, two singles, and a steal of home by Kelby Beste. The Cougars tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Ireland again reached base on a bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

Wayne State scratched across one run in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Brett Keim.

Cougar starter Noah Coleman (3-3) picked up right where he left off on Wednesday. The southpaw allowed just one earned run on four hits over seven innings, fanning eight.

Dwyer finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Fobes and Trevor Crow also had two hits apiece.

USF and Wayne State will conclude their four-game series tomorrow at Harmodon Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
