SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - After Upper Iowa sank their first 3-pointers of the game, the Unviersity of Sioux Falls couldn't climb out of their deficit and would fall, 82-66, on Friday night. The Cougars drop their second straight game to open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule, and fall to 2-4 overall.
The Peacocks opened the game on fire from deep, hitting their first six 3-pointers in the first 12 minutes and built a 20-11 lead. Josh Weeber and Grant Lang each went 2-for-2 in that opening span. Weeber would connect on another triple in the second half to finish with a team-high 13 points along with Bo Pagel.
Kebu Johnson's corner three followed a Charles Ward triple and cut the USF deficit to seven points at 24-17 with 10 minutes left in the first half. Lang hit his third three of the first half to push the UIU lead back to double digits and USF would not be able to cut it any less than ten for the remainder of the game.
Mack Johnson took his man off the dribble and connected on a layup in the final seconds of the first half to put the Cougars down 14, 42-28, at halftime.
Much like the first half, the Peacocks opened the second half with a barrage of 3-pointers in the first five minutes. The UIU lead first reached its pinnacle with 5:49 remaining in the half when it was 71-54 in favor of the Peacocks, then again when Carson Parker drilled a three with a minute left to play.
Ward's jumper four minutes into the second half cut the Upper Iowa lead to 10, but Jace Hanna's 3-pointer turned the tides back in favor of the Peacocks. Parker added his second three of the game a minute later to fully take the wind out of USF's sails.
The Cougars committed 20 turnovers compared to just nine by the Peacocks, who converted USF's mistakes into 21 points. Ward would finish with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, and Mack Johnson added 11 to be the only other Cougar to reach double figures.
Sioux Falls will host Winona State on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Stewart Center.
