Cougars Split Games Against NWMSU and Pittsburg State

After having to shuffle around their schedule for the weekend due to weather, the USF women's softball team was able to split games as they played Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kan. on Friday.

In game one against Northwest Missouri State, the Cougars used a comeback effort to pull out a 6-5 victory over the Bearcats. After five innings, the Cougars trailed by two runs, but a six run inning in the bottom of the sixth gave USF a four run lead. Then after giving up three runs in the seventh, the Cougars Amanda Walters recorded one of her 12 strikeouts to close out the victory and claim her second win of the year. In addition to her strikeouts, Walters also performed well at the plate where she went 1-for-3 scored one run and brought in two RBI's.

The Cougars scoring outburst in the sixth started when Shannon Daly put the ball in play up the middle and brought home Britni Broussard. In USF's next at bat, Taylor Jonas got out, but was still able to bring home Erin Scott. USF bumped up their lead when a Betsy Thomas single brought home Daly. Amanda Walters then came to the plate for the Cougars and put the ball out of the park with her two-run shot. The final run of the day came when Kellen Dewey hit a single that brought home Shae Hoskins.

In the Cougars second matchup of the day, USF faced off with Pittsburg State and fell by a final score of 14-2. USF fell behind early as the Gorillas built an 8-0 lead after four innings of play. Things then unraveled for USF as they gave up six runs in the top of the 5th. The Cougars tried to mount a comeback in the fifth as they scored two late runs, but it was too little too late as the Cougars dropped the game.

Besty Thomas was impressive in the Cougars two games as she went 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Erin Scott also had a solid outing as she went 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored.

The Cougars will take to the field again tomorrow when they face Pittsburg State and Northwest Missouri State for a second day in-a-row.
