Cougars Split on Final Day of Spring Break

The Cougars softball team wrapped up their spring break trip by splitting games against Illinois-Springfield and New Haven.

USF 2, Illinois-Springfield 0

The Cougars opened the day squaring off with Illinois-Springfield and came away with a 2-1 victory.

Amanda Walters helped guide USF to victory as she earned her ninth win of the season, recording nine strikeouts and zero earned runs in seven innings pitched.

The Cougars got on the board first when Betsy Thomas hit a solo shot into left field to put USF up by one run in the top of the first. Thomas ended the day going 1-of-3 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored.

The Prairie Stars knotted things up in the third inning when a Katelyn Weaver single allowed Mandy Smith to cross the plate.

USF went ahead for good in the fifth inning when Shannon Daly's deep ball to right field allowed her to take three bases and also brought home Amanda Walters.

The Cougars scored their two runs off of four hits while only committing two errors.

New Haven 5, USF 0

The Cougars and Chargers squared off in game two of the day, as the Cougars came out on the wrong side of a 5-0 game.

Both teams had impressive defensive outings through the first four innings as both teams were held scoreless. However, in the top of the fifth inning New Haven took the lead when a pair of errors by the Cougars gave the Chargers a 1 run lead.

USF looked to answer back as they had two runners on base with one out, but Haley Keiser grounded into a double play to end the innings for the Cougars.

New Haven added to their lead again in the sixth inning when a Gilly Childs single brought in two runs.

The Chargers added to more insurance runs in the seventh inning to give them a 5-0 victory.

The Cougars were unable to get things going offensively as they recorded only two hits while batting 0.091. Erin Scott was the long Cougar to record any hits as she went 2-of-3 at the plate.

Bailey Bouman was charged with the loss as she allowed four earned runs and eight hits. Bouman also recorded seven strikeouts for USF in seven innings pitched.

The Cougars are scheduled to open up the conference portion of their schedule this Tuesday, March 25 at Sherman Park when they play host to Southwest Minnesota State. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
