Cougars Sweep Doubleheader with SMSU

The USF softball team opened up league play on Wednesday when they squared off with Southwest Minnesota State at Bowden Field on the campus of Augustana College. The Cougars swept the doubleheader as they held the Mustangs to just 0.231 at the plate, winning the two games 6-1 and 4-1 respectively.

USF 6, SMSU 1
After the game looked to be a pitchers dual through the first part of the game, the Cougars scored all six of their runs over the last three innings to give USF a 6-1 victory.

In the bottom of the fourth a deep ball by Betsy Thomas brought home Erin Scott to score the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Thomas crossed the plate when the Mustangs failed to cover home plate after getting Kellen Dewey out on a foul ball.

The Mustangs answered back in the 5th when a Jazmyne Neely triple brought home Kailey Hanson to bring SMSU within one run of USF.

The Cougars responded by scoring three runs of their own in the 5th inning. The scoring spree by USF started off when Erin Scott hit a ball through the right side for a single and also brought home Haley Keiser. Scott ended the day going 2-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI.

With Betsy Thomas at the plate, the Mustangs catcher let a pitch get by which allowed Brooke Stetzler to score with ease. Thomas ended the day going 1-of-3 at the plate with two RBIs and one run scored.

The Cougars last run of the inning came on another SMSU mistake when an error by the second baseman allowed Erin Scott to push the Cougars lead to four runs.

USF added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th inning when a wild pitch brought home Andrea Sheppard Kauwalu giving USF their final margin of victory with five runs.

Amanda Walters (10-2) picked up her 10th win of the season as she struck out eight Mustang batters and allowed only one earned run while she pitched 7.0 innings for USF. On the season, Walters has compiled an ERA of 2.20 and a WHIP of 1.11. Walters was also effective at the plate as she recorded hits on two of her three at bats.

SMSU's Rachel Hoeppner (1-7) was charged with the loss as she gave up four earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched.

The Cougars scored their six runs on seven hits, only notching one error.

USF 4, SMSU 1
USF relied on a big third inning offensively as they came away with a 4-1 win. USF took control of the game after a home run by the Mustangs gave SMSU a one-run lead.

After giving up a one-run homer in the top of the third inning, the Cougars responded by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Betsy Thomas got things going when her deep double that narrowly missed out on leaving the park brought home Shannon Daly.

On the Cougars next at bat, Bailey Bouman hit a ball that was missed by the right fielder and resulted in Betsy Thomas crossing the plate.

Later in the inning, Bouman came home when Kellen Dewey hit a single to left field giving USF a 3-1 lead. Dewey finished the game notching hits on both of her at bats also bringing in one RBI.

The last run for the Cougars came in the bottom of the 4th inning when Betsy Thomas singled through the left side to bring Erin Scott home. Thomas ended the game going 2-of-4 at the plate, having two runs batted in and scored one run of her own.

Bailey Bouman (3-1) led the Cougars charge from the mound as she only allowed one earned run in her seven innings pitched.

The Mustangs Alex O'Connor (2-8) was charged with the loss in the game as she allowed three earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched.

The Cougars scored their four runs on seven hits while only recording one error.

The Cougars will return to action this weekend when they face U-Mary on Saturday and Minot State on Sunday with both games taking place at Sherman Park. Saturday's first pitch is set for 1 p.m. while Sunday has a start time of 12 p.m.
