Cougars Split with No. 13 Augustana

USF softball's Wednesday matchup with No. 13 Augustana College ended in a split with the Vikings taking game one 3-2 while USF ended the second game in five innings with a score of 9-0. After hitting 0.192 in the first game, the Cougars rebounded in their second try by batting a combined 0.364.

With the split the USF goes to 22-8 on the season and 10-4 in league play while Augustana sits at 28-7 overall with an 11-3 record in the NSIC.

Augustana 3, USF 2

After three scoreless innings, the Vikings got on the board first when Jenelle Trautmann hit a deep ball to right field that left the park and put Augustana up 2-0 in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars knotted things up at two runs apiece when an Amanda Walters double to centerfield made room for Bailey Bouman and Brooke Stetzler to cross the plate.

Augustana scored a go ahead run in the sixth inning when Jordan Schaffer hit a single to right field that allowed Emily Heinz to score.

USF put itself in a position to tie the game in the sixth inning when the tying run was on third base with no outs, but a pair of fly outs coupled with a strikeout ended the inning with no runs for the Cougars.

Amanda Walters (14-4) was credited with the loss as she allowed three earned runs in seven innings pitched. The Sioux Falls native struck out three Augustana batters while holding the Vikings to a batting average of 0.269.

Jenelle Trautmann (19-2) picked up the win for the Vikings as she struck out six Cougar batters and allowed only two earned runs in her five innings pitched.

Bailey Bouman paced the Cougars at the plate in the first game, going 2-of-3 with one run scored.

The Cougars scored their two runs on five hits while also committing one error.

USF 9, Augustana 0 (5 Innings)

The floodgates opened early for the Cougars in the second game of the day as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first to give them a lead they would not relinquish. The first run came after Bailey Bouman reached first base on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by the Vikings pitcher brought home Erin Scott.

Later in the inning Kellen Dewey brought in two runs with her single to centerfield that gave room for Bailey Bouman and Shannon Daly to cross the plate.

In the next at bat, Taylor Jonas hit a single to centerfield that brought in Shae Hoskins from second base and Kellen Dewey from first base to put the Cougars up by five runs after one inning.

USF got on the board again in the third inning when an error by the shortstop kept Kellen Dewey safe at first and brought home Bailey Bouman.

In the next at bat, Taylor Jonas hit a single to left field that brought in Amanda Walters. Jonas finished the game connecting for hits in her two at bats while also notching three RBIs.

The final runs of the day for the Cougars came later in the third when Erin Scott hit a single that snuck by the first basemen and allowed Brooke Stetzler and Shae Hoskins to score. Scott ended the game going 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBIs.

Bailey Bouman (7-3) picked up the win for the Cougars as she allowed only five hits in the shutout victory. Bouman struck out two Viking batters while holding Augustana to just 0.263 at the plate.

Carley Pickett (7-4) was charged with the loss as she gave up eight total runs in two innings pitched.

The Cougars scored their nine runs on eight hits while committing zero errors.

USF is scheduled to take to the road this weekend with games against Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State.
