BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Breaking through to win her first NSIC Multi-Event title, senior combined athlete Katlyn Sawtelle was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference field athlete of the week in a release Wednesday afternoon.
A native of Luverne, Minn., Sawtelle set a pair of USF Track & Field record en route to winning the NSIC Heptathlon this past Sunday and Monday. In her previous five NSIC multi-event competitions – either indoor pentathlon or outdoor heptathlon – Sawtelle had placed second four times. This time, Sawtelle seized control with some impressive performances.
She opened with her USF record 14.24-second time in the 100-meter hurdles, and closed day one in second place. After gaining back points in the long jump, Sawtelle set a PR in the javelin throw to overtake first and closed with another personal-best in the 800-mter run to capture the title.
Her total of 5,049 points tied her own USF record and cleared the provisional qualifying standard fro the second time this year. Her qualifying mark currently stands at eighth in Division II and is all-but a lock to earn her a spot in the NCAA Championship heptathlon field on May 21-23 in Allendale, Mich.
