USF Soccer opens road trip at UMC and BSU this weekend

SIOUX FALLS - Starting the three-game road trip that leads up to their season finale, University of Sioux Falls Soccer heads to northern Minnesota this weekend for their final weekend road swing of the season. The Cougars (3-9-2, 3-7-1) take on Minnesota Crookston (2-11-1, 1-9-1 NSIC) on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. then travel to Bemidji State (10-4-0, 8-3-0 NSIC) for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, Oct. 23.

Scouting the competition: Bemidji State
  • Bemidji State, who enters with a 10-4 record, found themselves ranked in the first edition of the NCAA Central Region rankings
  • The Beavers dropped a 2-1 decision at Augustana last weekend, but have won three of their last four
  • Bemidji State has scored 26 goals in 11 conference games, ranking second in the NSIC, and their nine goals allowed ranks third in the league
  • Bayley Ertl is tied for third in the league with eight goals in league games and nine total on the season
  • Raquel Thelen and Sarah Stram each have four goals and double-digit assists
  • Catherine Arneson and Anna Fobbe both have five wins on the season as goalkeepers
 
Cougars set D2 wins record with 1-0 victory over St. Cloud State
  • After the Cougars played 87 minutes with a 1-0 lead, the Cougars secured their third win of the season
  • Since the Cougars moved to NCAA Division II and joined the NSIC in 2012, USF had not won more than three games in a season
  • The 2016 USF squad accomplished that with three wins currently and a pair of ties brings their point total to a D2 best 11 points
  • USF's three wins have all come in conference play, besting their previous best with two in 2013
  • At 10 points in the league, three wins and a tie, USF is tied for 13th, which would be their highest finish since joining five years ago
 
Weiss's third goal of season moves her into top five in USF history
  • Senior forward Lola Weiss's game-winning goal against St. Cloud State was her third of the season and sixth of her career, moving her up the career record charts
  • With six goals, Weiss ranks fourth in USF's Division II history, just two out of first place
  • Her 12 points also rank fourth while her 29 shots on goal are second and 59 total shots are third
 
Perkins and Campbell picked as players to watch
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Perkins and freshman forward Carley Campbell were chosen as USF's players to watch in the NSIC preseason release
  • Perkins returns as in 2016 after starting all 17 games last season to finish with a 2-14-1 record
  •  A native of Liberty, Mo., Perkins  made 127 saves and posted a 2.59 goals against average in 2015
  • Campbell enters her freshman season from Monument, Colo. where she played at Palmer Ridge High School
  • She led her high school squad to consecutive state playoff appearances while she scored 10 goals and added 10 assists in her junior and senior seasons
 
Sioux Falls returns five goal scorers from 2015
  • All but one Cougar goal scorer returns for 2016, combining for eight of the team's nine goals last season
  • Lola Weiss, Alexandria Scott and Chessa Novotny all found the back of the net twice in 2015
  • Alexa D'Acunto and Brooke Jensen each scored once last season, notching the two gamewinners for the Cougars
  • Weiss and Jensen ranked 1-2 on the team with 29 and 26 total shots, respectively, while Novotny led with 15 shots on goal
  • Jensen and Jackie Montes both logged two assists and Montes was fourth on the team with 20 total shots, behind Novotny's 23.
 
Goosen continues building process in second season as head coach
  • USF Soccer head coach Brittany Goosen enters her second season at the helm of the program
  • She owns a 5-21-3 overall record at USF
  • Goosen equaled the team's previous win total with a  2-14-1 record in her first season as a head coach
  • She has again reached that same bench mark with two wins this season through eight games
  • The Olathe, Kan. native held coaching positions at Missouri-Kansas City as an assistant in 2014 and at Emporia State as a graduate assistant from 2012-13
