SIOUX FALLS – Senior forward
Daniel Hurtt had a double double and set a career-high with 31 points to lead the University of Sioux Falls Men's Basketball Team (2-2) to a 100-65 victory over Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday night at the Stewart Center. The victory evened the Cougars' record at 2-2 as the team heads to Puerto Rico for three games Nov. 23-25.
For the fourth straight game, USF surpassed 80 points and reached 90 points for the second time, going past 100 points for the first time since last Feb. 27 (105-100 loss to Augustana, NSIC Tourney). In total, three players had career highs with
Tom Aase (13 points and seven rebounds) and freshman
Devin Green (12 points, 7 rebounds) joining Hurtt. Five total players reached double digits with senior guard
Mack Johnson scoring 13 and sophomore forward
Drew Guebert adding 12.
But the story of the night was Hurtt, who had a double double with 31 points and 10 rebounds to go with a block and a steal in just 23 minutes. Hurtt hit 11-of-17 from the floor, including a career-best five three-pointers – all in the first half – on eight attempts.
"Our offensive numbers have been consistent," said USF head men's basketball coach
Chris Johnson, who picked up his 143rd career win at Sioux Falls. "It was nice to see Daniel (Hurtt) get some shots to fall. Quite honestly, we have three games next week so we needed to rest him on a night he might have had a lot more. But his production and that from just about everyone was exceptional," added Johnson. "In addition, for us to get 25 points and 14 rebounds from Tom (Aase) and Devin (Green), it was great to see. As we move along, we are getting better play off the bench which will be very important."
With Hurtt also setting a career high for points in a half with 27, the Cougars raced out to a 55-31 halftime lead. After trailing 8-4 early in the half, Hurtt went to work. He knocked down three consecutive three pointers over a 1:10 minute period to push the Cougars into a 13-8 lead, an advantage they did not give up. Hurtt hit 10-of-14 shots in the first half, including 5-of-8 from three point range while adding six rebounds – all in 15 minutes of action.
After Hurtt's shooting display, the Cougars, who hit 9-of-17 from three point range and 22-of-36 from the floor for 61.1 percent in the first half, received consecutive threes from
Clint Thomas and
Drew Guebert to put the lead to 19-8. At the 11:48 mark, Hurtt canned another three as the Cougars took a 28-8 lead.
Concordia battled back to within 14 (28-14, 10:21) but couldn't sustain a run against the hot-shooting USF squad. Green's three pointer at the 6:01 mark pushed the advantage to 39-17. Hurtt added another three with 1:13 left in the half to give USF a 53-29 lead. The Cougars led, 55-31 at halftime.
While USF was torching the nets, Concordia hit 10-of-29 shots for 34.5 percent, including 6-of-13 from three point range. Jake Jurss and Eric Kittel had eight points to lead C-W.
C-W made a couple of runs at USF in the second half but the Cougars continue to score, which did not allow the visitors any sustained momentum. USF's lead did not fall below 17. A dunk by Hurtt on a breakaway at the 14:40 mark gave him his career high in points. Then he made a pair of free throws at the 13:47 mark to give him 30 points (31) for the first time at USF. After that, the Cougars turned it on again with a Guebert three-pointer pushing the lead to 74-48 at the 11:32 mark.
Two Aase free throws enabled USF to build a 85-50 lead at the 7:51 mark. From there Johnson was able to insert players off the bench. Aase's jumper with 48 seconds to go gave USF 100 points.
