SIOUX FALLS – The University of Sioux Falls Men's Basketball Team, despite 20 points from
Drew Guebert, dropped a 90-74 decision to St. Cloud State at the Stewart Center on Friday night. With the loss, USF dropped to 4-7 on the season, including 1-3 in the NSIC. The Huskies moves to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in NSIC play.
Drew Guebert led USF in scoring with 20 points as he hit 7-of-14 shots from the field, including two three pointers and all four of his free throws. For Guebert, who passed 500 career points (507), he reached double digits in points for the ninth time in 11 games and recorded 20 points or more for the fourth straight game and sixth time on the season. Junior forward
Tom Aase had a career 15 points while pulling down seven rebounds and recording a blocked shot. Junior guard
Zach Wessels had 12 points, three rebounds and three assists before fouling out.
Scottie Stone led a hot-shooting SCSU squad with 28 points, hitting 8-of-14 field goals and 5-of-8 from three point range. He also was 7-of-7 from the foul line as SCSU made 15-of-22 as a team. But the story was the shooting by SCSU, which hit 33-of-57 from the floor for 57.9 percent, including a blazing 19-of-26 from the field in the second half for 73.1 percent. Besides Stone, Gage Davis had 17 points and Jon Averkamp, 16 for the Huskies, which reversed the script from a year ago when USF took a 98-80 decision in St. Cloud.
USF was 28-of-63 from the field for 44.4 percent but just 6-of-21 from three-point range. USF hit 12-of-14 free throws for 85.7 percent. For the ninth time in 11 games, USF won the rebound battle, 32-to-29 but the difference was the shooting.
The Cougars jumped to an early 3-0 lead after a
Clint Thomas three-pointer and led 6-5 when Guebert knocked one down from distance with 17:49 to play. But after that, the rest of the first half was owned by SCSU.
The Huskies ripped off an 17-0 run to take a 22-6 lead over USF at the 11:50 mark after Brindley Theisen hit a three-pointer. The Huskies were able to maintain the advantage until USF scored five straight points to draw within 35-26 with 2:20 to play following Guebert's drive and score. With four seconds to go, USF took momentum into the half when Guebert connected from three-point range to trim the deficit to 39-31. However, the Huskies used an 11-2 bench edge and a 10-0 margin in points over turnovers to build the eight-point half time lead.
At the break, USF made 11-of-25 field goals for 44 percent, including 3-of-9 from three-point range. The Huskies made 14-of-31 from the floor in the half for 45.2 percent. They made 6-of-12 from three-point range and 5-of-7 at the foul stripe.
The Cougars opened the second half fast, drawing within 39-35 with 19:25 to play when
Mack Johnson knocked home a jumper. But that was as close as the Cougars would get on the night.
SCSU ran off a 11-5 run to push their lead to 50-40 at the 15:40 mark on an inside basket by Jon Averkamp. From that point, they had an 11-6 run to extend the advantage to 61-46. After that USF cut the lead to 13 points at the 7:45 mark but could not halt the SCSU shooting and fell in the home opener.
USF will be back in action on Saturday afternoon against Minnesota Duluth with game time set for 6 p.m. at the Stewart Center.
