Box Score WINONA, MINN. — In the final game of the 2018 regular season, the University of Sioux Falls Soccer Team (5-11-2, 4-9-2 NSIC) dropped a 2-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) road decision to Winona State (8-7-1, 8-6-1 NSIC) on Sunday.
With the setback, USF finished 11
th in the NSIC standings with a conference record of 4-9-2, which tied the program DII mark for league wins (2017, 4-7-4). USF, which was directed by head coach
Brittany Domino, tied (2017, 5-9-4) a DII-program best mark in overall wins in finishing 5-11-2. USF finished one spot higher than the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll which placed them 12
th.
USF totaled 12 shots, including five on-goal, against Winona State. The two teams fought to a 0-0 halftime tie before the Warriors scored twice between the 58
th and 60
th minute and then held off the Cougars. USF, which was outshot 9-to-5 in the opening half, had a 5-to-1 advantage in corner kicks but couldn't convert the opportunities into scores.
Junior forward
Lauren LaFavre led the USF offense with five shots and freshman Aundria Varas added three with one on-goal. Junior defender
Lily McKown recorded a pair of shots. USF's goalkeeper
Brayden Paul made six saves on eight shots on-goal by WSU, which totaled 19 total shots in the contest.
USF had some scoring opportunities early in the first half as Vargas had a shot sail high of the goal in the seventh minute. LaFavre attacked the goal in the 14
th minute which forced the WSU goalkeeper to make her first save of the match.
The Warriors took the lead in the 58
th minute as WSU attacker Addie Royer scored the first goal for the Warriors from the top of the box. Abby Bohanski scored the second goal less than two minutes later after breaking away from the USF defense and placing the ball just outside of Paul's reach.
USF had one other scoring opportunity in the 65
th minute when junior
McKayla Philippi received a corner kick from sophomore
Lindsey Power and headed the ball toward the goal but a WSU deflected the ball. From there the two teams played solid defense with neither team mounting serious challenges over the final 20 minutes of play.
