Jefferies, Thorfinnson and doubles play helps USF Women's Tennis to 5-4 win over BSU

Cougars continue best start at NCAA DII era at 6-1

Box Score SIOUX FALLS – Led by the dominating performances of Chloe Jefferies and Joelle Thorfinnson, The University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis Team ran their record to 6-1, 4-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with a 5-4 win over Bemidji State (3-2, 3-2) on Saturday at the Huether Family Match Pointe. At 6-1, USF is off to its best start at the NCAA DII level. In addition, the 4-1 league start is also the best in DII program history.

USF used a 3-0 effort in doubles and added two wins in singles, including at No. 1 singles with Jefferies and No. 5 with Thorfinnson, to pick up the victory over BSU. After losing 8-1 a year ago, USF improved to 4-2 in the all-time series with BSU.

"We had a really strong effort tonight," said USF Women's Tennis Head Coach Kevin Grebin. "In doubles, our three squads against fought through and pick up wins, which helped up win tonight. Chloe (Jefferies) and Joelle (Thorfinnson) were dominant again this week. It was a great team win," he said.

At No. 1 singles, Jefferies pushed her record to 7-0 with her sixth straight set victory in seven wins. On Saturday night, she rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Zoe Lindgren of BSU.  She is the first player in USF DII program history to stand 7-0 to open the season.  At No. 5 singles, Thorfinnson recorded a 6-2, 7-5 win over Breann Walsh of BSU as she improved to 6-1 on the season, including 4-1 in league play.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Jefferies/Quandt improved to 5-2, including 4-1 in league play, with an 8-6 verdict over Zoe Lindgren/Ariadna Lopez-Simo of BSU. At No. 2 singles, the USF team of Miller/Thorfinnson moved to 4-3 on the season, including 3-2 in the NSIC, with an 8-4 decision over BSU's Brooke Mimmack and Breann Walsh. The No. 3 team of freshman Rachel Klatt and Kelsie Sanders stand 5-1 overall, including 3-1 in the NSIC,  with a closely fought 9-7 win over Hannah Peterson and Hope Johnson of BSU.
